Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

#1 Re: Off Topic Discussion » I have jury duty, can you share your experiences? » 2017-07-23 17:10:01

out of the four times i went to jury duty i was never selected. no one else was selected either. you sit in a big room with everyone and they update the count for how many cases are left. they usually have wifi so bring a laptop or something to pass the time. they have a cafeteria where you can buy food or you can leave and go out to eat somewhere. sometimes they let you out early. most of the stuff that gets ran through is for small claims court so they don't need a jury. i was told if i was selected to tell them i was a student (which i am) so they would pardon me because i can't stick around for a trial.

What college do you go to? And also do you ever get to do more complex networking, or is it all kinda left to research groups and internships to teach you that.

I go to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. There are some networking related classes but none are required. The program allows students 6-7 "tech elective" classes which includes things like cryptography, game design, web dev, app dev, networking, etc. For the most part, the classes are great. A lot of the professors are very qualified to teach (backgrounds at Bell Labs and other companies. one even helped develop the intranet) but I have heard of some classes being a flop. Best bet is to read class reviews if they have something like that for your school or ask people who have taken them.

Here is the catalog of classes if you are interested

Ofc new music/artists get a chance, in fact I think thanks to technology today especially the internet they have more chances than anyone anytime ever.  All I have to say is, I'm a open person, I like to listen anything, if it sounds interesting for me it's enough, I don't care about the lyrics, so you can come up with a head banging hit and I will appreciate it but I can say this: with few exceptions, sadly in the last ten or so years, even more, I almost can't remember anyone to be able to come with an entire album of music to be as likable as the legends mentioned above, I mean,,, sure they make some great hits and all, ofc after a week or a month they are goners from the charts and replaced by new artists. Nothing they created made me listen their entire albums  or more from them than their hits or singles. I could listen anything from Queen instead or whatever, heck Kate Bush if you want, undoubtedly they are LEGENDS and their music after decades and decades still sounds like the greatest hit ever.

That is true. The music industry is so over saturated with these artists that crank out half assed "hits". That is the nature of the business now. Get your one hit wonder on the radio, make money, and then everyone forgets about you. That being said, it can influence what is released. Why would anyone stray from the formula that works? Artists today are groomed to sell singles rather than records.

I love how the internet has introduced me to a lot of artists, some I would have never found or heard of, but the internet can also be part of the problem. I remember when I was younger, owning a cassette player was really cool (at least to me) because I could listen to a select few songs in my collection. Listening or knowing a specific song was a privilege. Now you can find almost any song with enough sleuthing. I think the point I am trying to get to is that artists don't need to make their music memorable because the internet will do it for them. Their "legacy" will live on with community online. Another thing about the internet is all the resources. Musicians back then had to learn most to everything on their own which led to raw creativity. Now there is a million and one tutorials on how to do something.

I want to add more to this post but I can't focus right now. I'll leave you with this and will probably come back and edit things in maybe.

You listed a lot of great artists and a lot of my favorites. A big reason I even listen/feel nostalgic to these artists is because my parents listened to them while I was growing up. When I was 2 or 3 years old, my favorite artist was Bob Marley (I don't really remember and I'm going off what my parents told me).

I've never been a big Prince fan (I don't hate him but I just never listened to a lot of his work but I probably will now) but there is a really good rendition of "While my guitar gently weeps" which made me realize how savage he can be on the guitar, which was something I was never aware of.

Guns and Roses "Paradise City" reminds me of camping because my brother made a slide show and used that song.

I will say you should give new music/artists a chance. There are incredibly talented people out there as well as the incredibly untalented, just like back then. A lot of people tend to believe that every older artist was a legend (like the ones you listed) but fail to realize there were also terrible artists back then. We don't hear about them because they were terrible! But of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Another reason to listen to new artists is so you can feel nostalgic about them in the future. There are a lot of alt-rock artists I associate my high school days with because that's who I was listening too. I lot of great car rides and great memories with my friends and music.

Anyways I will get on with a few more favorites.

Queen - Almost any live performance. Freddie Mercury was an incredible performer with so much passion and energy. I would have loved to been there live.
ABBA - I really like "Take a chance on me" because my dad would sing the "chance chance take a chance" part when we would play monopoly when I was younger. (He would only sing it when someone pulled a "chance" card. I never knew why he would sing it but later realized it was a real song)
Bon Jovi - My dad trying to hit all the notes on "Livin on a prayer" always cracks me up
Pink Floyd - Driving through a desert at night after doing some illicit activities and listening to the album Dark side of the moon. Creepy but was a fun night

Some other artists not listed that I really enjoy
Beatles - This was an early favorite of mine. They get a lot of flak for being overrated but I still enjoy them
The Clash
Joy Division
Daft Punk
The Smiths
The Doors
LCD Soundsystem - Gave a great performance at Coachella this year and an awesome tribute to Bowie EDIT: Forgot to include an impressive fact. Most of the instrumentals on their (his?) records are all done by one guy. He brings in people to perform live though
The Strokes/Julian Casablancas solo work or with The Voidz

#17 Re: Off Topic Discussion » Halloween » 2015-09-17 17:04:25

Halloween parties (like in the movies) do exist! I have 2 experiences of these kind of parties. At home, the entire street (cul de sac) gets together and throws a big party. People are still welcome to trick or treat and are even welcome to hang out for the party. At college I know a lot of people who dress up and just walk around the city looking for parties. Granted it's a college town but the parties still exist!

I think the ridges would be more of a problem for the skateboarder.

At my university they have a bike lane (also used for skateboarders) and a pedestrian lane.

There is no deadline. This way you do not have to rush the levels, and so that you would not feel any need to prioritize it over other things.

I do stress the fact that there will be future contests. You may want to finish before the next contest so that you can then focus on that one. But again, there are no deadlines.

I love cooking and can't wait to start again when I go back to school. My best meal is chicken alfredo with pasta. I need recipes though for other things!
