After some considerable discussion and analyses with my weather buddies and meteorologist friends over the past 4-5 months, we, and all the climatologists around the globe, agree to some extent that a strong El Niño is apparent.
For the record, the super 1997-98 El Niño sent devastating floods across California, bone-dry droughts to Australia and India, and other significant effects such as a warmer globe.

I'm not joking; every El Nino is different. Some last longer than others, while others are warmer than others.
