Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Glitch = Bad?

There is a thin line between a bug and a glitch, a glitch only difference with a bug is that players can take advantage of glitches, while bugs simply break stuff in the game.
(Not talking about hidden mechanics, as those are not bugs or glitches but that, hidden mechanics).

Should a glitch never become an official feature, or perhaps a hidden mechanic, even if that adds new useful mechanics to the game?

Re: Glitch = Bad?

If a glitch interferes with normal enjoyment of the game, it should be removed. But some glitches can open up new ways of enjoying the game.

Speedrun community wouldn’t exist without glitches

Re: Glitch = Bad?

P.S: I think that to make a glitch an official feature, or a hidden mechanic, it might require adjustments, and to be cleaned from the mechanics that caused it. After so it would need to be re-builded as an actual individual feature/mechanic. Finally it would not be a glitch anymore, but an intended feature/mechanic officially part of the game.

Re: Glitch = Bad?

As long as the glitch/bug meets all of the following:

- doesn't hurt normal gameplay
- contributes to someone's enjoyment
- doesn't have any implications for future updates

No sense in fixing it or making it "official," just leave it.  If it doesn't match all of those, then it should be fixed.

Re: Glitch = Bad?

The only example of a glitch being made into a feature I can think of is Hoiks in Terraria. They're an unintended feature that was exploited by players and eventually acknowledged as a feature by the devs. IIRC they actually had to make sure they didn't accidentally "fix" Hoik sometimes. The only thing is that it wasn't really made into a feature, so to speak. It just existed, and eventually it was designated the title of feature instead of glitch.

Re: Glitch = Bad?

no
look at bunny hopping and rocket jumping present in many games for example, back in quake both popped up as glitches, but both were incorporated as features because they made gameplay way more interesting and fast paced

Here is my guess, the line between those is as thin as it was when comparing glitches to bugs:
I guess the good glitch is a glitch, and the bad glitch is a exploit.
A glitch is a different use of a function, it is only possible because of a malfunction in the code. Its purpose is to be used as an additional feature that weren´t actually there before.
A exploit is an unfair use of a function, it could be either a glitch or a normal funciton (being used in an unintended way). It affect the gameplay of other players.

The glitch is to a exploit what a human is to a werewolf.
A human can turn to be a werewolf, human is not a threat, but werewolf is. Not all humans can turn into werewolfs but all werewolfs can turn into humans. Humans that can turn into werewolfs are unstable and dangerous.
A glitch can turn to be a exploit, glitch is not a threat, but a exploit is. Not all glitches can turn into exploits, but all exploits can turn into glitches. Glitches that can turn into exploits are unstable and dangerous.

How a exploit turns again into a glitch?
When a exploit is used to take "advantage" over other players, then lets consider everyone use that exploit, when so, everyone has the same advantage over other players and if so, it becomes again into a glitch.
Example of those are the ones from gunz, there were plenty of exploits/glitches that were so fun to use that they ended up being considered glitches and not exploits.

About gameplay: Is it full single player or it has multi-player features?
There can´t be exploits in full single player games, as there is no way you can be unfair with anyone but yourself. Here all exploits are considered glitches.

Glitch and exploit (that has its core as a glitch) can be synonyms until the community decides those to be either a glitch or a exploit.
A glitch is an unintended mechanic that is used intentionally as a feature that is new and adds new mechanics to the game.
A exploit can be an unintended mechanic or a normal feature used in an unintended way, that is used principally and intentionaly to get unfair advantage in the gameplay rather than being used to anything else.

A glitch not always can be an exploit as it could be specificly integrated into a meachanic, and it can be seen just as an additional mechanic (that is actually a glitch)
Lets say for example that EE hold space was actually an unintended feature and it is actually a glitch, it can´t be considered a exploit since everyone can use it and it does not affect the general enjoyment of the game.

As an example, you have a fork and a banana that is supposed to be distributed in 3 players.
Normal gameplay: The fork is supposed to be used to slice the banana in three parts
Gameplay using glitches: Instead of slicing you decide to smash the whole banana to then divide and distribute the smashed banana in 3 parts (or even convert the banana in 3 bananas)
Gameplay using exploits: Instead of distributing the banana in 3 players, you using the exploit can eat the whole banana without giving anyone else anything. (Unfair use of a feature or mechanic (intended or unintended) that is used to take advantage over other players affecting negatively other player´s gameplay)
_

As there is a difference between a glitch and a exploit (and between a bug and a glitch), there is also a difference between a exploit and a cheat. (And the difference between those is separated also by a very thin line)
A exploit is always caused by something inside the game
A cheat is always caused by something outside the game, something that can´t be normally done with what the game offer. (A hack or a cheat code for example)

A exploit is an unintended (or even intended but used in an alternative way) feature that is used intentionally to get unfair advantage in the gameplay.
A cheat is an intentional alteration of the game that gives an unfair advantage in the gameplay.
(A glitch is not a cheat unless it is able to be used as a exploit, and if so it is no longer a glitch but a exploit and in consequence a cheat)

Re: Glitch = Bad?

according to bungie studies, if a bug:

a) benefits the player, get rid of it
b) if it does not benefit the player, leave it
c) if it makes the experience worse, make the bug bigger
