In may sound confusing, but..

Add blocks switch

Example of this picture: When player has id 0 turned off - this block is just a block of air. if id 0 is turned on - this block is ladder

Pretty interesting
But it works basically by replacing 1 block with another, I think there will be a truckload of lag if you replace dozens of blocks at same second
I mean I want this but game engine will probably say no

I knew you will say that but I think it's more dependent on the core of the game rather than what it runs on (flash or unity)
Unity won't solve everything

"it depends entirely on the actual performance of the code itself"
So, if you make a good code - it wont lag

I like the idea but I don't like the graphics. The graphics remind me of that one block in the EE remakes.

I think you can't place blocks , which require special info (like signs, portals, switches, etc) because it takes too much memory (but I wish portals)

it would open a new world of level creation, and in a sandbox game, that is good. it would help with quests for various paths. maybe a gatekeeper blocks your path, but giving him an item (switch #___) would make him leave, or a ladder maker is out of wood, find some wood (switch #___) and he makes a ladder to a higher area. Only problem is that there will likely be a need for some sort of indicator for a changing brick for players. It should not work on gates or doors, but as long as it switches between nothing and the key/switch, but not the reverse, that shouldn't be a problem for switches and keys. Maybe attach # to a block that toggles as an "id number"...
