Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Implementing. It's just something that looks very simple on the face of it then it rapidly gets a bit complex. I'd rather add something like markdown that isn't markdown. Like **bold** and __underlined__. Except with /italic/ for italics instead of both _italic_ and *italic*. And none of that crap where single new lines become spaces, and two new lines make a paragraph break or two spaces and THEN a new line if you really want a new line." Then again /slashes/ for italics could get funny when you're trying to post a file name or path that isn't a URL.

I’d much rather have the live preview that mikelol described, in a separate box under the editor.
Clicking Preview (and then being unable to quote posts) is a little tedious, especially on mobile since I do a lot of proofreading and small edits before posting.
One bot to rule them all, one bot to find them. One bot to bring them all... and with this cliché blind them.

The traditional implementation is to have the formatting button be a toggle, so to unbold text you'd have to highlight it and click the bold button again.
I hate tall signatures.

I have nightmares about WYSIWYG editors so unless basically the entire site tells me to do it I'm probably not going to.
that is exactly what i need and want in my topic (ok mine is useless now you can mvoe it or lock it its upt to you) it makes managing bigger topics liek ghrapics dumps easier to manage and edit
thanks hg for making this much better and ty for my avatar aswell

It's not that necessary but it could be useful sometimes if you're using a lot of BBCode tags, especially in long posts. A preview that updates whenever I write should be fine too. I hate clicking preview every time to check if I haven't done any mistakes.

I think the best (read: easiest) implementation of this is to have some sort of live preview.
For longer posts you're probably better off using an actual editor. Emacs has multiple modes for editing bbcode (albeit without a preview, though I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to make some faces for the limited set of formatting possible in bbcode). I'm sure bbcode packages exist for other, lesser editors. If you're wondering: yes, this entire post was an excuse to shill Emacs.
Interestingly, there's a bbcode exporter for Org. Seeing as Org is basically the greatest tool to ever exist (and has packages for live preview, though I can't confirm this is still the recommended way to live-preview org files), this is probably the best you're going to get.
I hate tall signatures.

No one even needs this, and if it's such a hassle to implement, I don't want it for Diff's sake.

That's just because you don't understand basic concepts like ctrl+f. It would be quite easy to see anyway if you just... well... look. An hour is quite the exaggeration. Well either that or you should see a doctor.

I just use the preview button.
