9,999 switches can come, and so can 99,9999.
The image below shows a graph displaying a font I created that could be the possible solution for 99,999 switches.
However, before we make an instant change to suddenly switch to the tiny 2x5 font I have provided, we must ask ourselves:
1) Is it graphically appealing to the target audience we are looking for?
As you can see, it is not. It is a small 2x5 font, that is basically begging for mercy on graphical looks.
It compresses the numbers so small it's hard to read from a distance.
Do we really want this?
2) Is it worth the functionality?
As hummerz once said,
well the theoretical limit for IDs is the area of the world, so 300*300 is 90000... we can stop at 99999.
This amount of functionality provided for 99,999 switches would be more switches than you could put in the largest world! ( At current time, 400*200 = 80,000, 300*300 = 90,000 )
But, do we really need 99,999 switches in EE?
We have 999 switches already.
If we assume that every 4 blocks (2 x 2) contains one switch door, then the 300*300 world would provide 22,500 switches needed. If we assume a large user input area (50x50), we can bring this down to 20,000 possible switches needed
Every 4 blocks ( 2 x 2 ) = 1 switch
300 * 300 = 90,000
90,000 / 4 = 22,500
22,500 / ( 50 * 50 = 2500 ) = 20,000
Then there's a need for 20,000 switches, aka a 99,999 switch need.
But you have to take into consideration, what complex contraption besides a computer would use all of those spaces, and we're assuming at a very large rate compared to most switch worlds.
I built a tic tac toe level, with a fully capable AI to beat you any way possible. There's only one way to beat it as of now, and if I fix it, that'll cause other ways to beat it or make it easier to beat :/
But the tic tac toe level, is built entirely in a 100x100 world, with almost all of the switches on the left side, with a roughly 50x50 ( I assume ) User Input area, and the switches only take up half of the world.
The AI being impressive and the mass of switches however, causes the player to be very slow. It takes at most one minute to calculate a move, and at minimum around 30 seconds. ( I assume these times based off of memory ).
It's all done with only 00-99 switches.
And now we have 999 switches.
Do we need 99,000 more?

Realistically it will never be needed and the numbers are at the smallest permitted size; just because you can make a font smaller than 4 pixels wide doesn't mean it should be in the game.

99,999 would be unnecessary. If you had even 10,000, that would be one block per nine even in a Huge World. If you can think of a level idea that would require 10,000 or more switches, please let me know.

You could use up to 9,999, but the numbers might look kind of ugly. You could also have one of the digits appear on the edge of the block, which might look a little bit weird, but would probably look better than two-pixel digits.

Why would anyone place 900000 block switches? they need to place blocks, coins, trophys, swithes. You need at least 1 switch for every block so you can place a total of 450000 functional switch blocks unless you have a hack world.

If I added a 16×32 character editor that would be 512 more switches. Not to mention 6×12, 12×24, etc.
4 digits would allow this world to be expanded further on, with the digits only being compressed when the switch number is a 4-digit number.

i mena you can run out of switches pretty fast and a coindooor witith only 999 cons is sometime slow aswell if a world has more coins and death doors well it would make death tycoons longer then only 999 deaths

The font I used in the EEU sample does support 2823 characters including all of the characters base64 requires so with 6 characters per switch in base64 that would be 68719476736 switch numbers. Therefore people could fill a 262144×262144 world with unique switches!

I was thinking a base 36 would work very well in EE. EE cares not to differentiate between caps and doesn't generally include symbols, but just adding the alphabet on top of 0-9 would do the job.

your calculations are entirely incorrect, there are 16777216 colors (256^3), the formula is amountofvaluesperdigit^amountofdigits not amountofvaluesperdigit×amountofdigits and EEU will have 24×24 blocks not 16×16.
