This sounds like the beginning to an excessively long vsauce1 video that answers the question really early on and delves into "but where do WE come from? HMMMM" and other introductory philosophical concepts.

They are mined / pumped from the ground.

Threads are either little magnetic marks on a disk or electrical charges on an SSD, so come from electricity, which (sadly) still mostly comes from burning fossil fuels, which are extracted from the ground.
