Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Post Formatting Guide

Sometimes your well-written text blocks are enough, but other times you might have to give detail to your posts. This is where formatting joins.

Every blog, wiki and forum software allows the use of a markup language to make your threads the most beautiful of them all. Some of them are Markdown, HTML itself, and BBCode, which is used by this forum.
BBCode is a strict markup language similar to HTML. It features tags with the same names of HTML tags, but it uses square brackets "[ ]" instead of angle brackets "< > ". If you know HTML, this markup language should be easy to use.

Here are the basics of BBCode. Not much, frankly.

BBCode Rules

For when you want to give detail to your text:

Basic Formatting

For when you want to organize your text into boxes, separate it with rules, list, quote users, or post source code.

Text Blocks and Separators

For when you want to post URLs to your game worlds, images (including GIFs) or videos:

Embeds

For when you want to play a lot with formatting:

Nested tags

For when you want to express yourself:

Smilies

For when you're ready writing your post.

The only guide available is the forum's help page, which only explains the default BBCode tags. The other guides by Zoey were removed due to personal issues.

The objective of this guide is to keep it clean, friendly, and update it whether any new formatting feature is implemented.

Re: Post Formatting Guide

Overall a great guide //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/big_smile There's just a few things I would improve:

  • <> can be called brackets if they are being used in that way, so I would say 'bbcode uses square brackets instead of angle brackets' instead (or at least call [] square brackets).

  • I would put the nested tags section in with bbcode rules, and have examples of how to use =, because then all the syntax is in one place.

  • I wouldn't say trigger blocks work exactly the same as spoilers, even if you explain the difference later, because this has led a lot of people to be confused about when to use each, maybe say similar to instead of exactly like.

  • Maybe include the actual options for how you do an alphabetical / numeric list.

  • Should probably explain how to get the topic / post / forum ids for the forum link tags.

I didn't know they could be called brackets too. Thanks for that.

I decided to explain the usage of nested tags after explaining how every tag worked, to prevent any kind of initial confusion.

For users who have trigger content hidden, which are the majority, trigger blocks work just like spoilers, with the detail of the TRIGGER WARNING text being part of the spoiler title. For users who have them shown, they work like quotes, with a TRIGGER WARNING heading text.

I believe that whoever decides to set them to be shown, should know the functionality of the trigger blocks.

LukeM wrote:

Added.

LukeM wrote:

Explained that, as differentiating between posts and topics is a bit confusing.

Thank you for all your suggestions. They've helped a lot with this guide. I hope you can find more improvements and flaws, I really appreciate it.

Added, although use of that tag is really discouraged.

EDIT: The inserted text tag has has been modified to not make the text barely visible, so the tag can be used properly now.

Re: Post Formatting Guide

I've updated this guide once again to allow new users to search for what they need even more easily.

  • Each main category has a description, this should allow users to go where they have to go, instead of having to explore each category.

  • A lot of empty space has been removed from the Basic Formatting category, while still looking clear.

  • The Text Blocks and Embeds categories have had their content separated into spoilers.

Probably not wise to add your email unless you enjoy spam, also why aren't emails automatically snipped?

I do enjoy spam. Also, it's not my business email.

Honestly that would be a great addition.

I don’t think you’ve explained how to embed a gif.

Added. Also took the chance to improve the example code to allow users to write lists in a cleaner way.

This topic doesn't really need to be sticky. We already have a link to it below the text editor.

I tried every HTML tag in BBcode and found two more tags:
Del, another form of S
Em, another form of I

Yeah, I knew of those tags. But we decided to keep only one alias to prevent potential confusion in the future, those being the ones shown in the BBCode editor.
