I think WebGL was always the aim, using just unity would be basically flash all over again
Also, I dont think it is very laggy... at least no worse than Unity itself

You should think about the people that has a browser that doesn't support WebGL (Like me). Or the people that doesn't has a "good" gpu to be able to run WebGL games/other stuff.

You're using Firefox 52, your browser supports WebGL. And it's a 2D game, you don't need a beefcake of a GPU.
