Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

I swear, I had this idea back in September.
The way this works is that I will release a clue a day starting with the 16th and ending on the 31st.
Each clue will hopefully be released around noon EDT, but I make no promises.
Each clue will tell you only a single character of the gem code.
Therefore, I politely request that no one tries bruteforcing it.
For reference, this is how I have divided the gem code into sections:
the second character of the second set is X.
I should warn everyone that there WILL be some technical stuff.
HOWEVER, several of the clues do not require any specific knowledge.
But yes, you will probably have to Google some things.
Lastly, it's Halloween, so I will give you one small, cryptic hint:
trick or treat.

Please, do not allow zeldaxd to join it
how do you propose i ban someone from a publicly posted gem hunt

... Lol i figured out the cryptic Hint Already.

It is an awkward font, though.
Sorry, but I really don't expect the 'no brute-force' to carry.
Perhaps a way to layer the first eight days to the last eight days...
If it takes 5 seconds to do a gem code (just ballparking eh)
And there's 10 numbers and 26 letters...
On the last day, brute forcing would take 3 minutes.
On the second-to-last, 108 minutes. (1.8 hrs)
On the third-to-last, 3,888 minutes. (64 hrs). At this point, you're in the clear.
But that's assuming there's a five second delay. Reality is probably more like 50/sec
If it is 50/sec, those numbers are .012 minutes, .432 minutes, 15 minutes, 9 hours, 14 days . With that number, you reach closer towards the last four being in brute-force territory.
96 tense hours of hoping that some malignant gent doesn't decide to throw your honor system out.
Or you could hope that the admins would go "oh too bad" and give you another. Then you could take the gems for yourself. win-win.
jk.
just consider numbers.

All characters are released but the order is said along with the last clue
Clue - Position
1 - 4
2 - 7
3 - 1
4 - 13
5 - 2
etc...
Thank you eleizibeth ^

to be honest, what's stopping someone from just bruteforcing literally random gem codes?
and lbr if someone can make a program to bruteforce a gem code, I am fairly certain that they have a fairly good chance of being one of the few to figure out at least some of these clues. maybe. i'd say they're not SUPER hard, but could just be me.

valid points. I'm probably illustrating this because I'm a math nerd more than anything. Thanks for humoring me!
(36!)/((36-16)!*16!) using combinatorics for total possible variations, I get 7307872110. Stop me if I'm wrong... cuz this next math is weird.
why not brute force everything?:
total combinations: 7,307,872,110
Let's say there are 500 gem codes. (ha)
14,615,744 (then there's this many for all the not-gem codes with one gem code)
Say we can do 50/sec (that's 20 milliseconds for each)
81.198 hours
... wait what?
4059.92895 hours if there's 10 gem codes.
The question becomes how many people actually have outstanding gem codes. Really, that's the important detail. Precision is key, as the curve gets pretty intense towards the extremes (10 is extreme). 6 is 6700 hours. 20 is /only/ 2030 hours.
Alright, someone point out the hole in my logic > the more users EE has, the more gem codes, the more stolen gems? I imagine active gem codes is linearly related to active users... but brute forcing possibilities skyrocket. Interesting conversation starter.
but you don't have the order!
Good math.
7307872110 possibilities.
however, my math knowledge escapes me here. The number used there is too high, as there is a chance for the duplicate characters.
But I'm not sure what the chances are... or how to use them. SO
if anyone has ideas, do tell.
>if there's six duplicate pairs (too high, ik)
105 days.
wow. such combinatorics

I figured it out already. Here's the full explanation:

Challenge accepted.
Does a gem code contains only letters or does it contains numbers and special characters as well?
You will specify what type of character we must find in the clue?
This seems a very interesting gem hunt.
