This idea is about two blocks: Darkness block and torch(light) block.
Darkness block is a special block in a sense that it is in it's own layer, above the regular blocks.
What it does is that it makes everything under it dark, including smileys, coins, action blocks, etc.
Torchlight block is in the same layer as the normal blocks. When a player touches this block, he gets a torchlight.
Torches last for 2 minutes at a time and can light up (remove effect of darkness) a circle of radius 5 blocks. However, the power diminishes every 30 seconds and the radius is reduced by 1 block each time.
As long as a player is touching the block, he will keep getting new torchlights (only the latest one will be effective).
I imagine that this might be helpful in cave levels and dark rooms where the player is not supposed to see anything.

Seriously though, the darkness part is a cool idea. Torch could work well too. Another idea I had is similar to this, but it's not exactly darkness. It's like, you can't see anything until you have explored it, and once you have explored it, it stays visible. Other than that idea, something to build on your idea could be placeable torches which last forever/limited time, and also torchlight that you can hold (what you suggested) that lasts forever. And maybe even torches with varying intensity.

I mean, it kind of already exists with the secret blocks, but it's super limiting to what you can do with it sadly. Just by putting the secret blocks on a different layer would open up the possibilities, as you could then put them over action blocks/decorations.

Before I thought about the torchlight and wrote this post, there were actually a few other ideas:
A special torch-hat smiley (the ones people use for cave exploration) which will get brighter as long as you collect little energy icons. It's a bit like (decaying) magic level but with torches.
Decoration-level torches which can light up a custom area (default would be a radius of 3 blocks) and will NOT set the smiley on fire. Neither will it give free fire potions.

Actually a good idea, but I think the blocks should be uncovered in a '+' shape (with the player in the middle) so blocks wouldn't look so dark-ish.

Also, those secret blocks are transparent on the minimap, which isn't always desired.

The extra layer for shadows could work, but with the fall of potions and the rise of effects, maybe instead, a "blind" effect would work better. Pass through to trigger the same darkness effect until passing through an effect that would negate it (light, the reverse dark effect, and healing). Certain light blocks could be added to provide a see-able area without removing the effect. Things like fire, lava, lava glow(decoration) and torch (i would bundle torch, miner smiley, and blind effect together) would give off light at various strengths. Fire could be 5 radius, torch (customize-able) default between 3-5 radius, lava 3 radius, lava glow 1-2 radius. Using an effect helps convenience and eases the pain of creators(placing shadow everywhere) and development (programming a third layer). A light radius around your character would at default be 2-4 blocks, with certain light object (collectibles?) improving your range (possibly for a limited time).
