Programming vs. Game-maker

What do you people think about game-maker? It seems rather simple and complicated. How does it compare to programming your own game?

Programming your own game will be much more complicated, but then again it will have more flexibility.

GameMaker is easy, but that's because it isn't really meant for making "big" games.

You can make big games, but you're probably right, it's not meant for big games. Most of the games become apps. Also, if you've seen the credits of big games, there are alot of people that helped to make it, so GameMaker isn't ideal. I don't think GameMakers flexibility is a problem. You can use code in GameMaker aswell, it's not just limited to drag and drop.

Programming is more complicated than GameMaker but it's more flexible it's easier to make big games.

In my opinion, GameMaker has more good points.

Gamemaker. Cause programming is hard to do, you must know all lessons of scripting, takes longer to make.
In gamemaker, all you do is drag the actions to make a game. it still has scripting, but mostly you drag actions.

There is a vast amount of differences between GameMaker and Programming.
In general, it is undecided until you specify a language to compare it to.
Different languages have different focuses.

Let's take a GameMaker project you are probably accustomed to: Aslai's EE Animator.

EE Animator is clearly developed in Game Maker. It works, but it has lag and by limited I mean I don't think you can use a .NET .DLL file in the scripting environment GameMaker provides.

If you want to be serious with making games, then you will need to know which type of game.

A windows application game could be built in XNA in .NET and then ported to Xbox360 as well.
However, a web-browser game could use Flash with Unity3D.
There is many options, but GameMaker is limited, it's not something I would suggest for any real serious developers.

I have a little bit experience with both of these so this should be good. Programming your own game would be a challenge, but in a way it might be fun. It would depend on the game your making. In GameMaker, it is pretty easy to manage around. You just need to remember a few things like _sp and things like that. So for easiness, I would take game Maker. But If you really want a very hard challenge, I would try normal Programming. I also agree with atilla though

No way your gonna make an AAA game with game maker, or even anything close to popular.

See the gamemaker showcase? Meh.

See the programming showcase? Look around you, MW3, Minecraft, mario, etc.

I would definitely go with programming, Not just because its what I use, But you will soon see gamemaker may not have everything you need, after you get bored with it.

Also, With programming, If you really end up enjoying it. Its a possible career.

Try C# (Get Visual Studio C# Express by Microsoft) and Use XNA to make game, terraria was made that way, and so is my game.

Basic and simple -Game maker

Slightly more complex -Programming

I often usegame maker, but I have been know to make alot of games without it.

Game maker is way too glitchy.

Last time I tried making a platformer the collision would be 2 pixels away from the actual object.
