The bigger the game the longer the wait.
I have a steam account, I never use it though. I've bought and tried TF2 before.. never really liked it.

Re: So I just got started using the whole "steam" thing

Took me about four or five hours to download TF2. So far I really like it, and I've been able to play well with just a trackpad. I love how all the classes are so different from each other (especially Spy).

I wanted a Steam but I deciding not to until I got a better Internet connection, besides it would probably say 14days until download completes because my download speeds are 2-4KB/Sec.

I heard that TF2 is free now...
The only reason why I don't play it is because I REALLY suck at first-person shooters.

TF2 is certainly not in the same league as Counter-Strike, just do it and see what happens.   Even if you're the worst player ever, maybe you can practice and get better rather than quitting.

Re: So I just got started using the whole "steam" thing

Why would you install a DRM for playing ? Why would you install something that slows down your computer ?
I still don't get why people use steam. I mean, don't you ever play lan games with your friends ? With steam, they all need to have a copy of the game. So, for a 2day lan party, you'll have to pay ( with 10 friends ) minimum $600. To play ONE game ! Considering that there are thousands of game each years, that is quite expensive, don't you think ?
What about your dad / bro / sis who can't play the game you bought - for familial use "only" ? If they want to play, you'll have to share your account - and we all know now what happen when you share any account ( "Hacks" and stuff, you don't know what they'll do with it, and where they'll use their accounts. ).

I really don't understand why people use steam..
Anyway, I enjoy my cracked version of steam games. Being able to play something without any compagny recording everything I'm doing is quite nice too. And no, I'm not going to give any money for a DRM bullsh*t.

Because it's required to play a legal copy of the game, probably.

Everything you install is going to slow down your computer, including the game itself.   But you don't get to pretend that the slowdown is of any significance.

Very quick worldwide access to all your games without any physical requirement, such as carrying the discs with you.

You mean, if you want to gather 10 friends to all play the same game at the same time, you need 10 copies of it?   Madness.   Should everyone in the world get to share a copy because it's only ONE game?   Or should they all pay, because there's a million instances of one game.

RavaTroll wrote:

Chances are good that you didn't buy it for "familial use" at all.   You bought the rights to use one copy of their game.   Although, there's nothing to stop your familial member from just using the PC you installed it on.

Read above.   You aren't required to literally share your account at all.   As for somehow knowing that they'll use hacks and stuff, that's not true either, is it.

That's great, but you'd likely enjoy the legal copy just as much, if not more if your pirate copy has issues running.

No. It's not a game feature. You could play most of steam games without needing steam. It's not like it's a package for the coding or necessary for the graphics / gameplay. It's just added. Therefore, it has nothing to do with the game. It's just a way to have all your game in the same "place" if you need it, the only thing usefull on steam. Steam should be used only by Valve anyway. ( Like Battle.net, which is used only by Blizzard. )

Yeah, but since it's not needed by the game for the gameplay / graphics, I shouldn't have to launch it to play my games. It's just an added restriction.

I agree, it's the only thing good, but this wont make me buy any steam game.
Also, I want to give my money to the devs, not to Valve. It's the same with music and major industry, I don't care about giving money to EMI / Warner / Universal && co. I want to give money to the artist. That's all.

Well, back in the 90's, I remember we could all play one game with one frackin' CD. It was just amazing, easy and funny. Now, with steam / origin and co, eveyrone has to owe the game. What about casual gamers ? What about discovering games in lan parties ? What about people too poor to have all the games their friends have ?

Yeah, but the game works with your account. And sharing an account is stupid. Just read people complains about "hacking" and "stealing accounts" problem on any MMO forum. Also, My father and I play games, and I'm pretty sure that if I had a bro / a sis', he/she would play too.

Sure it's a restriction, but it's one that they've deemed necessary and probably is if they want to try and protect their profit margin.

Valve takes their cut, for sure, but you still give money to the developers.   Especially if those developers happen to be Valve themselves.   Consider that without Valve, perhaps even greater profits would be lost through paying for discs to be made and distributed.

Sure, I think the original StarCraft is an example of that, but just because you're given a nice feature doesn't make it the standard.   Casual and poor gamers can play what they've bought or try someone elses if allowed.   I don't think many people are entitled to what they haven't earned.

Steam free versions of games would be nice, sure, but that's not reason to dislike Steam by itself.   By buying through Steam, you do support Valve, but you also obviously support the developer.   If they made considerably less money by using steam than by not, I doubt they'd really do it.

Yeah, I guess that's the main reason video games producers uses steam.

Steam has many users, I agree it helps promoting the game and making profit, but I don't think it would change a lot without steam.

The $1 = ?1 ( and = 1£ perhaps, I don't know how it is in the UK ) was mostly about the usual prices of games, that are often sold at the same "price". Well, since I'm studying IT, and I'm a gamer, I'm usually using my computer when he's home, so he wont be able to play when he wants.

Agreed. That's too bad it's in Valve's hands actually. I'd like to see an open-source project about an anonymous "steam" which allows to use a game on several accounts but allowing only one CD-KEY to play with different CD-KEYs. So players can enjoy lans and play with their friends, even share the game with them, and if one of them want to play with other CD-KEYs, he wont be able to because only the first "CD-KEY" user will be able to do so. I don't know if you see what I mean. There's a lot of thinking to do about it though. I think there's a linux "steam" that is open-source, but I don't know a lot about it, and I don't even know if there are .exe for windows.

Well, never really played starcraft II. I played the campaign, twice, but the online thing was way too "mmo" for me. And I prefer MMO-RPGs than MMO-RTS && MOBA. But if I had to try, I'do go with 'toss, ot maybe terrans.

Valve won't like it very much I'm sure, but what Valve doesn't know won't hurt them.

Yeah, people sell battle.net accounts too, but I don't think it's a good idea, 'cause if somehow they discover that sell, I don't think they'll leave the account open. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue

@Thuggishprune did you even set your region to where your living? I bet the default region is in America. So if you live somewhere else then you may have to wait while downloading.
