I believe it was there 4y ago too. So this is nothing special, it's probably built in the WordPress theme they use.

nvm, it's built in to a wordpress plugin to keep track of statistics (it's a .gif file). They also sometimes do this in spam emails, whenever the special image is requested, the spammers know the mail has been openend. That's why gmail now stores all images on their servers so this tactic becomes forfeit.
