Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

A Short But Scary Social Experiment

As done by yours truly in the space of about fifteen minutes.

So, it's not anything new to hear that most of the players of EE are young -- and usually gullible -- but how far does this go?

I was inspired by the purple god aura, thinking how similar it was to a guardian aura.

Holy crap, I wondered. Could I get people's accounts by saying I'm a mod and using the purple aura?
Of course, that would require the code, but I am nothing if not crafty.

As it turns out, I didn't even need that.

Case number one:

b0b00cde98.jpg

and naturally, I tried the account. I logged into some random person's account, just by saying I was a secret mod. It literally took me three minutes.
I put a sign in a world saying not to give out their account info. Also, they have a different password on their email, because, yes, I checked.

I asked another person -- they gave me an alternate one, which was still a dumb idea -- and I spent some of their energy.

I asked a third; the account info they gave me didn't work, so I asked for another, which still didn't work. (I just checked the email/pass combo they gave me, and was asked to verify my identity -- so close but so far into logging into their email account).

A fourth publicly said they wouldn't give me their account, and to ask people who were more gullible.

I asked a fifth; they said that it was no secret I'm a mod and that I wouldn't want their account info anyway. Good job.

Maybe I got lucky -- as I said, I only asked five people. But this isn't the first time I've phished people on various websites. This might not even be the last!
I don't have malicious intent behind it, because if there's one thing I don't need, it's more accounts.

So, what have I learned from being bored?
That we should probably at least write "MODS DON'T NEED YOUR ACCOUNT INFORMATION, DO NOT GIVE OUT ACCOUNT INFORMATION TO ANYONE" somewhere; this has the added bonus of cutting down on reported "hackings".

tl;dr: I successfully phished two people, and I wasn't even trying.
don't give out your passwords people

Re: A Short But Scary Social Experiment

Yeah I've noticed that people are prettty eager to give away their account information.

I've had people offer me their accounts when I'm wearing the bunny smiley because they think we'll trade accounts. I would just say "DONT GIVE YOUR ACCOUNT INFORMATION TO ANYONE" (Except people you trust).

Woah, that's bad that some people give away their personal information just like that.
But it's also good. For some people, Everybody Edits is their first online community and it would be a good place to learn not to give away your personal informations. IMO admins should make it clear on the main website, put it in a place where everybody can see.

Re: A Short But Scary Social Experiment

I'd feel bad for whoever was pranked into giving their account information... however if I was the "moderator." I would find it hilarious if someone bought it. That has happened to me before with a random user demanding for edit, if not, ban and steal my account. I just kicked the user and he never returned. So all the prank will really give you, is a temporary ban from the world you decided to prank https://wiki.everybodyedits.com/images/c/c0/069_LOL

I remember once someone gave their email and password when I asked to add as friend, but the account was so poor I just abandoned.

This is a false statement.

Whenever you chat with anybody in Steam it has a little message like this:

If that was just written at the start of every chat log it would probably help a ton.

I was thinking this was hilarious until you mentioned trying to get into his email. The people that share accounts could very likely have the same password for their email. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/sad

I'm guessing they trusted you because players usually don't get private messages and the private messages kinda look like system messages.
You know, with the star (*) and all...

I have permanently left the game and forum.
EE is an entertaining game and I enjoyed playing it...
...but it's time for me to move on.

Maverick: Started up on a 6, when he pulled from the clouds, and then I moved in above him.
Charlie: Well, if you were directly above him, how could you see him?
Maverick: Because I was inverted.

HAHAHHAHAHH!!! Why do I find this so funny?  I have a question though, if someone was doing this, would it be breaking the EE rules?

I agree this. EE should not be considered a place where you can hack users by giving account.
