Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Re: what was the purpose of gem codes?

People were able to buy gem codes from the shop, to transfer gems to alternate accounts and/or friends. But they were removed thanks to famous ex-moderator JaWapa.

Now you can only request gem codes by contacting administrators.

Uh, no. They were removed because of gem farming.

Re: what was the purpose of gem codes?

They were removed few days after JaWapa was caught building an external gem market, because of all other possible methods to abuse gem codes.

While gem farming was the main one, it isn't the literal reason of the service removal.

I'm curious - what other methods are / were there?
I am not aware of any.

They were not removed because of me.

They were removed because of Jesse and Atilla.

Atilla was farming.
Both were stealing gems from people's accounts.

I didn't steal any gems from people's accounts. I wasn't the only one farming either, and I didn't create a black market to sell them as you have - I only bought classics personally.
If you combine in-game reward gems with purchased gems you're creating an incredibly messy system and a large potential for abuse impacting the in-game economy, and people will create bots to take advantage of it as well.

I remember a user contacting us about gems disappearing. We ruled it out to be a weird bug in the DB. We reissued the gems, and the user came back a bit later saying they were gone again.

After some digging it was found that you had access to their account and were taking the gems. You moved the gems from alt to alt, making it a **** nightmare to trace.

was that before captcha requirements? Even then, that'd be kinda interesting, writing a script to generate alts to transfer via gem codes ad nauseum. Especially efficient if you guys were doing things manually. (Not that I approve, but this seems fittingly atilla-esque)

edit: though that method would suggest you'd never actually find the real culprit, only guesses
