Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Re: Coronavirus Disscussion

At this point, though, we've now got variants to deal with and consider how they're going to fly with the vaccines.

Luka, sounds like your experience was faster than most. But to my surprise, they didn't even care if I stuck around. Just popped in, got shot, and then I was on my own.

9.6 doses for every 100 people doesn't seem promising so far in terms of "herd immunity"

Does anyone know, is this going to be something that we end up handling like the flu? (i.e., yearly shots to handle mutations/strains)

Yeah I think UK has decided to handle covid like a simple flu now. Meaning no quarantines there

The UK's vaccinating everyone in order from older to younger. They're doing over-50s atm, so I likely won't get offered mine until July earliest. There are absolutely still quarantines if you get covid or travel from abroad.

They say they'll start reopening shops, restaurants etc. in England by May so restrictions are still pretty tight.

I don't think there's enough data yet.

Re: Coronavirus Disscussion

If you want to skip lines, check if the places nearby have no-waste lists. A friend of mine got her vaccine days after she went on the no-waste list, it took about a week for me. After that, you just get scheduled normally for the second dose. Only downside is you have to be relatively ready to hop over there at a moment's notice for the first, or just wait until you get lucky with the timing.

Re: Coronavirus Disscussion

^ Pretty sure it's 90% less risk of serious health complications. We still don't know if the vaccines really stop you from spreading it. etc etc

I'll happily be corrected, but I could've sworn that it's generally international policy to try and address domestic demand before sending it elsewhere like so

Though I think it would also be good to verify. How would you have the vaccines distributed? The US buys vaccines from international suppliers and then gives them away? The international suppliers limit their shares given to the US? Pretty sure this last one has happened a bit as well.

But I'm not sure. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Data for pfizer-biontech:

The trial:
- 95% effective against symptomatic disease
Real world data:
- 97% effective against symptomatic disease, severe/critical disease, and death
- 94% effective against asymptomatic disease

With the vaccine distribution it's a bit of a catch 22, on the one hand the best thing to do to combat the disease is to share doses fairly between all countries, but on the other hand most of the vaccine doses were pre-ordered to fund their development, so without these large pre-orders from richer countries we might not even have them.

One of the biggest examples is probably the UK vs the EU. The UK from the start pretty much threw money at every vaccine they could to speed up development, while the EU treated it more like a normal purchase of resources so spent more time trying to get a good deal and things. This means that the UK's vaccine supply chain is now several months ahead of the EU's. This is leading to a fairly big disagreement where the EU is arguing that it was irresponsible for the UK to hog so many doses of the vaccine (we purchased significantly more doses than we need), and the UK is arguing that if they hadn't pre-ordered these doses they wouldn't exist right now in the first place.

Honestly I don't really know what's best. Sharing vaccines will lead to fewer deaths overall, but allowing a country first access to the vaccines they funded gives an incentive for everyone to contribute as much as they possibly can to vaccine development. If instead of developing vaccines ourselves we all put money in a shared pot that was used to develop vaccines for everyone, I doubt the richer countries would have contributed as much money as they have now, so we probably would have less vaccine supply overall.

Re: Coronavirus Disscussion

I think it's selfish of a country to "pre-order" doses just for themselves. If a country has the money to fund development by pre-ordering doses, the doses they order should still be distributed fairly and evenly across the globe even if they didn't pay for it. Also borders are fake

"Hogging a the vaccines"
Here I am, unvaccinated, even though I was part of the first group to be allowed to get them.

This is not true for all cases. For me it's that I live in a country with a permanent tyrannical government that purposefully keeps people brainwashed and poor, destroys services, and makes it nearly impossible for, or prosecutes whoever attempts to improve their life or leave. I know perfectly that here there won't be a legitimate vaccine.

This is only a me problem tho, dw. I hope everyone outside can get vaccinated.

Re: Coronavirus Disscussion

It seems a bit unrealistic to try and convince countries that they should purchase the vaccines and then not receive them.

That said, something in the news today struck me as relevant. India has started requiring that otherwise-exported vaccines must be used for domestic concerns first. But they're also hurting quite a bit. So perhaps while it might sound best to share vaccines, there's an argument to be made that you're saving the most lives by sending them to the places that take the situation the least seriously. In theory, the folks who follow health guidelines would have less extreme crises. Thoughts?

Too bad that vaccinations don't prevent spread except in the larger understanding...
