Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Moved.

I’m not sure there are concrete plans yet.

Current (tentative) plans are for Discourse. This may change in the future, we haven't gotten around to chiseling anything in stone.

While yes, Discourse is a good software, don't expect any customer support. When I tried to contact them privately, I got told that "This channel is for our paying customers only", this means that you have to pay $100 for their hosting.
They have a forum meta.discourse.org, but they ban people from there for absolutely no reason. I got banned for 3 months for asking if you can host the forum for completely free, then right after I was unbanned, they banned me again, this time for 1 year.
They removed the 1 year ban after 3 months, but threatened to permanently lock my account without a chance to appeal if "I continued my behavior".

So note that while the software itself is great and flexible, if something breaks, you won't get meaningful customer support.

Re: New forums?

i hope you guys just stick with fluxbb (or phpbb), modern forum ui seems to operate on the principle of simultaneously scrunching everything together and also making them as large as possible. i have no idea how messy things might be on the back end though

10 years and still awkward. Keep it up, baby!

I have to say some things.. Firstly, while it does look more flexible the forums look really weird - more like a combination of stackoverflow, github and possibly some more platforms. Secondly, the pricing is quite expensive with their limitations regarding stuff like storage, monthly page views and etc. Getting the business or even enterprise plan would really shake the pockets.
It would be for the best if you could stay on fluxbb tbh

Re: New forums?

Discourse seems to be open-source, so using its software doesn't necessarily mean using its service. So at this point, it's much better than using Discord, for example. But if we use some basic, bare-bones forum implementation it could be possible to integrate the forums into EE! itself and help the community thrive in its already small space.

Oh, and don't forget the RSS feed feature. I don't use it but somebody might.

Can't reply in-depth at the moment, will try to later. But for now: If we go with Discourse, it'll be the open source, self-hosted variety (I'm not expecting or wanting support), and it'll be undergoing some heavy theming try to and make it more comfortable and familiar; I'm also not a fan of the vanilla appearance.

vBulletin is like $500, and you still have to host it yourself. Software such as Discourse has either $100 for dedicated hosting + support, or it's open-source but you have to host it yourself.

Re: New forums?

So, I have seen a debate of a possible move from FluxBB to Discourse.
I have been on Discourse forums for quite a time to judge the features between these 2 softwares.
So I'll list the pros or cons of the move.

PROS:
- Generally more moderation tools for posts instead of just locking and sticking of threads.
-- Locking (selfexplanatory)
-- Pinning - same as sticking
-- Unlisting - makes your post invisible, it is only available via a link.
-- Archiving - Locking 2.0, it disables other features other than replying.
-- Announcement - The post appears as a huge banner on the top of every page.
-- Converting - converts a topic into a PM and vice versa.
- The text editor uses generally less tags and more markdown, so instead of "[ b ] text [ /b ]" you use "**text**".
- More "clean" forum design.
- Moderation actions (locking, archiving, etc) can have reasons that appear on the post.
- Each post can have a "moderator announcement" on it, which uses a blue banner above the post itself.
- 2 types of bans
-- Bans (suspensions) - lock an account entirely so you cannot log onto it at all.
-- Mutes (silencing) - lock posting permissions, but not liking and PMing admins. Silenced users can also view private forums that they have access to, unlike suspended users.
- You can import posts and data from basically every forum software, including banned users and posts, so all older posts will be intact.
- 2 interactive forum tutorials.
- Badges, to entertain and motivate people
- Installable plugins and themes

CONS:
- No in-built warning or warning point system, all bans and warnings will be done manually.
- No self-locking systems. All locking will be handled by mods and mods only.
- Annoying email spam (but I guess that depends on the forum configuration)
- You can only have 5 permission levels (called trust levels), usually the first 3 are automatic promotions and the 2 are reserved for admins. You can however create "groups" and add people to them which have their own permissions.
- No system of anonymity.
- Absolutely terrible customer support, as I stated in my previous post.
- By default, there's a blinding white theme.
- Minimalism.
- No permanent ban option, you have to do a 1000 year ban
- No built-in ban appeal system

Well only your experience with the support doesn't mean it's completely bad. Also, based on their responses you continuously asked the same question despite them actually giving you an answer.
