Savepoints. You touch one and your progress in the world is saved, so you return to it the next time you visit the world with your coins, effects, and switches intact.
Perhaps by default, it works like campaign saving worked in EE, so only one world can be "saved" and only for half an hour, but you can buy upgrades in the shop so you (as a player) can have more savepoints active at once and for longer periods of time. That could serve as a good energy sink.
