I think it's a combination of the average age of EE players being older now than they used to be (hence the kinds of words used to insult each other is more frequently more offensive)

The toxicity of the community has been the same for all the years, but now that there are only 5 people in the room it is much easier for everyone to notice it
P.S: ("In the room" I mean globally, EE and EE forums has around 5 people active in total)
