I look at Super Mario Maker 2. It has the exact same problems as eeu and ee.

It has different physics, but as close to the first game as possible.
It has new content which is not just additional stuff to the game, but actually new stuff changes every aspect of the game.
The levels/likes/currency/whatever, all got deleted. i mean left in the first game, because the second game is a different entity.
and many more examples

EEU should've been the reboot of ee like the SMM2 is the reboot of SMM.
the problem is that SMM2 is loved by thousands of people and they are willing to pay over 60$ just to play the offline mode (extra 10$ for online)
and EEU is late to the party by half of the year and it's not even here

What I would say is that the difference is that EEU is starting with a small player base and hoping to profit from 99% of players being completely new to the game whereas Mario Maker is trying to profit from mostly an existing player base + obviously desired growth. Hence, if EEU does manage to bring in new players, it's not really going to suffer from any problems surrounding the slight change in physics etc.
