Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

previous versions:
note: no I didn't make all the colours
note2: I'm just playing around to see what it could look like
note3: I may or may not make more blocks (like metal blocks, face block, etc) and make this an EEU concept graphics thread
note4: probably not

sorry but tbh they look awful

Shades need more contrast, and the bricks within the tiles are gradient shaded. Bricks are flat and rectangular, and a gradient-type shading tries to give it a cylindrical shape, though with so little contrast between shades, they hardly look shaded at all.

Hello.
I also had the same problem with starting with graphics. But as now had to lighten everything in blender my eyes completely stopped ignoring that fact.
You need to add a slight contrast to your bricks. Right now, they look flat and have a very low contrast between the 'real bricks' (those lines.)
Remember me?
...
I wish I accepted Gosha's criticism earlier. I suggest you to read what he posted back then, it helps me now. If not Gosha I guess I never became an artist (in one or the other way... )
I hope you appreciate my effort.

Still doesn't look good.
The dark lines stands out out. It looks like a grill in front of a colored background instead of actual bricks.

The " grill in front of a colored background"-look comes from the shadows. Right now there are shadows at the top of each inner rectangle, which makes it look like they're behind the darker lines (since we assume light is coming from above). If you change it so that the shadows are at the bottom and highlights at the top the form looks a bit more correct I think, like so:
I was thinking there could be a different pattern for the brick if they don't want it look too much like mario, but these look a bit weird maybe.

I think i know what seems wrong.
look at intersection of brown brick with green one. They are different colors so it seems ok. But when you combine brown brick with brown brick you get nasty looking thick border.
Thick border is bad on it's own, but it's even worse compared to brown-green intersection.
maybe the solution is to remove border on the right and bottom sides?
Offline
Huge improvement, but can still be improved. For instance, for the border problem that gosha pointed out, you could shade the border by making it lighter at the top left. Not sure if it's better to do a gradient or just have the top and left sides a lighter shade.
thx for sig bobithan

applied a texture over the 256 colors (the texture is based on that black brick sample)
