It's probably because the hitbox for activating stuff is on the bottom right corner of your smiley (If you do /tp username x,5 y,5 and place spikes on the left and top you don't die) but the smiley hitbox is on the entire smiley so you don't go through blocks on the left. So the top half of your smiley touches the block preventing you to go left but the bottom right corner is already on the boost sending you left.
