Ways for recreational fishers to protect our fish stocks.

We need to look after our fish stocks so there are fish left for the future for others and so they don’t

disappear. This can be done in lots of way, which involve setting rules for taking fish.

The fishers have to follow limits on how many fish and shellfish they can take.

These limits also involve the size of the fish.

For example: one person can catch seven snappers and no more than that a day. They must be 30 cm big or larger.

The rules also apply to shellfish, you can get 50 green-lipped mussels per day
Toheroa is prohibited to catch.

Another example is the white pointer shark/ spotted black groper are not allowed to be caught.

There are also restrictions on the areas that fishers are allowed to fish.

For example: drift nets are not allowed to be used in the Waikato River. Entrapping or entangling fish or marine life is not allowed to practiced there.

If fishers are fishing in a different area, they need to know what the restrictions are for that area.

For example, fishing methods (set nets) or catch limits may be different.

There are also rules about the tools you can use when fishing - only 2 rods per person, 1 net per boat and 1 long line.

If all fishers stick to these rules it will help to protect the fish stocks in New Zealand.
