maybe, but I can tell you it's the max-width: 98% that keeps the images from stretching out the screen horizontally.

I'm not sure what the intuitive solution is. Naturally if our container is set to fill the window... and the image to fill the container... zooming is going to result in an image that stays the same size. would the requirement be to set a fixed max-width? that would defeat the other purpose

I think it's more of a browser problem, as HummerZ said the website just scales to fit your screen, and zooming out effectively just increases your screen size...
