We could have it show a pop-up widget, then from it users could join.

Having it show a widget with current online users is better than just being taken to the chat.

The discord has been actively hostile towards the game (posting game-breaking exploits and clients), I would probably rather remove the link entirely than change it.

E: Not because of any hard feelings towards the chat, just because I don't think there's any suitable chat that I could link in the header right now.

That's a little problem that can be fixed through moderation. How about you negotiate with Processor to implement a forum rule to prevent "game-breaking exploits and clients" posts. Processor can give one or a couple of Discord Grown Ups to be a moderator for that reason. Have a Discord message to everyone saying "rules have been updated.(display)".

If someone breaks that rule by posting cheats, then the moderator(s) delete the post and give a temporary ban or something else.

What other reasons not to link discord to forums? Everyone or at least almost, is from the ee forums and game.

I say it's time to make EE Discord official.
