Perhaps because the grass blocks with corners are hard-coded as decorations, instead of fully solid. Decorations have a more noticeable shadow.

Had this problem with the contest blocks, never was able to figure out why... I guess the issue has been around for a long time.
It appears to happen with blocks that allow transparency.

Blocks have different shadows because they are situated in different tabs.
Ones with strong shadows are decorations. I've looked up in the client - grass blocks with corners are in decorations tab. I've changed that and everything has been fixed.
