If it's about an event, ask questions about it. Let them know you're on their side (be confident it's the right side though).
Ex:
Mary: I was assaulted earlier!
You: Whoa what happened???
Mary: *recalls the events leading up to and perhaps slightly after the distressing event*
You: THIS. CAN'T. STAND. We shall set forth to TERMINATE their bloodline!!!
...maybe not so extreme
