shift-click, normally. You can also use the block at specials where there's no block texture.

Click this and then you can click and hold the mouse to delete.
Hold shift and click and drag to delete

And yes if you hold the SHIFT key you can erase while you click and drag your mouse.

I used to use ctrl or shift.
Both work.
