Sonic Mania is a Solid 9/10

I was quite hype pre-release so this is probably biased. Just wanted to post this bc wynaut

But like, the nostalgia card was played extremely well. It took everything good from the 2D Sonics and removed most of the worse parts. Every area, old or new, felt clean. None of the non-recycled boss fights were too challenging, but they were all unique and made the player think a bit (except for the guy in Oil Ocean Zone that has like 2 attacks and goes down super easy). The recycled boss fights didn't need much changing. Not to mention I never would have guessed I'd be facing Eggman in Puyo Puyo. Eggman (Robotnik? Idk where this game is in the timeline) was portrayed more comedic than the original 2D games, and it felt like it fit him perfectly. All the recycled zones were fan favourites, and Starlight Zone and Scrap Brain Zone were basically injected with steroids to get Stardust Speedway Zone and Metallic Madness Zone. All the contraptions that makes every zone unique were still present in the new zones as well, in the form of weird gravity centers that spin you on a Z-axis and launch you, popcorn machines sending you straight up, necessary platforms that crush you between spikes if you linger too long, and quite a few more. Finding the Special Stage rings was not too difficult, but you had to go out of your way to find a few, and that's how they should be. The worst music in the game was found in Lava Reef Zone and even that is a 7/10, everything else 8/10 or higher, including the remixes in the recycled zones. Also, the & Knuckles joke/meme is basically canon now, since you can play in a mode that adds Knuckles to your playable character, including Knuckles, getting you Knuckles & Knuckles.

This game kicked **** and is definitely worth $20. If you liked any of the 2D Sonics you'll love this game. If you never played the 2D Sonics, now is a good time to get into them.

In my opinion, ratings as a whole are good to determine if the rated content is likely to be appreciated by the average consumer. It's individual ratings (as in made from only a person or a small group) that you shouldn't trust, because no one has the exact tastes as you.

Back to Sonic Mania:
IIRC the developers of the game aren't from SEGA, which explains why the style of the game is different than the last other sonic releases. I suppose I could see myself getting it on switch if I had one. Not on PC though, because I already have what I need there.

I mean I'd rather give a number than an adjective since most people don't know what I consider "great" or "bad" or "good"

And why it's better (only played like 2 sonic games but have seen people play sonic 1 and all of those horrible ones)
