Because if you're doing something wrong, they need to be able to tell you to stop.

You're stuck with just leaving the world.

well at this point their power of being impossible to mute can be/is abused

There are plenty of things that you can claim the staff is abusing, however, I'm not sure this is one of those things.

You can just ignore the chat, which has the same effect.

How about when you mute a moderator, only chat messages from that moderator with your name in it (and private messages) are shown?

What about when you mute a staff member, they get a message saying * SYSTEM: <username> has muted you., so they know you mtued them, and if you do something wrong, they can find other ways to talk to you, like signs.

That seems kind of silly. I don't think a moderator should have to edit somebody else's world just to talk to you.
