Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

If a bot sends a greeting, they usually send it right as they hear "add".
However, this will filter the message to the very top of the player's chat.
Is there a proper way to detect when the player has sent "init2" besides doing something funky/weird/non-api-correct e.g. listening for "m" put a teamblock and wait for that to be recieved wait 2 seconds after you hear "add" e.t.c?

Not that I know of... Although this would be really useful
Your best option is probably to just check for the first 'm' message, but as you say, this isnt a very neat way of doing it
Usually when you see someone connect, they fall to the ground, then suddenly teleport to where they originally started (theyve sent their first m message), which would show that they've connected, I cant think of any other way that doesnt require timing or anything actually inside the world

Isn't 'add' sent to the other players after you send 'init2'?

I think its after you send init 1, because even if you have a bot that never sends init2, then the bot still appears for other players
