Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

I have a GIF I made which is 154KB and it is almost 4x bigger than the maximum size, 40KiB is way too small.
To put the size in context, if there were 1000 users all with 40KiB avatars then 0.04GiB is used, which is incredibly small.
I propose that the maximum size is raised to 256KiB which allows for better GIFs but not so big that you will get insane GIFs.
Also can I request permitting SVG avatars?

SVG Master Race
SVG Master Race
I'm confused, does that even apply here?
...As you can see by my avatar, gifs or not, I have no worries. Pretty sure the size here is pretty small but I haven't done the research.
edit: oh, koya said that. svg is icky tho

i wanted to post it :/
Imagine everyone would save a avatar of size ~infinite * ~infinite
The loading for the first image would take longer, the other would too, and you would create lag.
For other reasons it's the screen. If you would have avatars width/2 you would see not much from your post and formatting would suck.
If you have a problem with loading the page because of avatars you can always disable them entirely (like i do for aesthetic reasons).

A few days ago Mozilla announced that they had fixed a 0day in a SVG animation use-after-free vulnerability.
As much as I like and support vector graphics, my doubts about their proper implementations remains challenged.

Mozzila did the same thing with PNG in 2010 https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/ … sa2010-41/
Have you shared the same opinion in 2010 to png as you do now with svg?

Yes. I'm not being discriminatory towards the format itself, I am sceptical of the implementations of it, although one of them has been around much longer with more mature libraries around it.

Mobile data users will not notice a difference.

Not bigger resolutions, 184x184 is plenty big enough - larger file sizes is what I'm asking for.

Bump. I'm trying to create a new avatar/signature set and I have a perfect avatar that fits with the signature I currently have, but it weights 64 KiB which exceeds the 40 KiB limit.

For most image types, you should be able to compress them and still use them, and if not, you could always change to a different format, or decrease the colour depth slightly

A PNG. I saved it in 24-bit mode so that it weighted less, but it still weighted too much (64 KiB). I tried to compress it using compressor.io and the compressed image ended being bigger (70 KiB). Perhaps it changed the format back to 32-bit?

If there isnt any transparency then you could probably disable that (reduces it by another 6 bits), then if it is still too big either try another lossless compressor (maybe try this one), or use a lossy one (Here is an online one I found, not sure how good it is)

RGB is 24 bit. RGBA is 32 bit. Each channel gets 8 bit usually. The only place I've seen 6 bit color being used is cheap monitors like the one I'm staring at right now and even then it tries to fake 8bit with dithering.
e: went ahead and upped it to 256KiB 128KiB.

Oh ok, I always thought that color depth referred to the actual accuracy of the colors, not the number of chanels...

pls allow 4K60fps mp4 avatars now i can't live with 128KiB
