"EE Veterans" should be treated just the same as new players.  Just because someone found this game later than someone else doesn't make one inferior or superior to the other.

Half off on gems is fine enough I think, now that gems can be rewarded from campaigns and daily logins.  Black Friday sale covers this.  I just hope they continue having holiday sales, as there wasn't one this Halloween.  Maybe they forgot?
