Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Re: Music

Tbh I like pretty much anything besides rap and dubstep, but my favorite type would be instrumental. Favorite artist/composer is definitely Thomas Bergersen, the god of epic music.

Re: Music

The best way to see what I'm (or anyone is) into would be through Last.FM, I think.  Going by my top 50 from the past year breaks down a little like this, with genres in order of where an artist first places (minus genres which would only hold one artist from the top 50 like shoegaze or grunge):

Hidden text

The interesting thing about genres is that two artists can be in the same genre, from the same area even, and make music that sounds completely different.  Take Chief Keef and Lil Herb for instance, both are solidly in the drill genre as they're making gritty raps about street life over beats that sound like Atlanta trap with a darker edge, but where Herb tends to stay conventional with his flows and lyrics, Keef branches out and over the past few years has done his own thing more often than not, sometimes venturing into lazy, leaned-out, slurred singing over his own sparse production.

To move it out of rap, where I'm sure a lot of users aren't as well-versed, you could look at Julian Casablancas + the Voidz vis-à-vis John Frusciante.  JC and friends tend to work within convention, much like Herb or even Casablancas' own work in the Strokes and as a solo artist, but they earn the "experimental" tag with what they do to push the boundaries of those conventions.  Listening to a track like "Human Sadness," the closest thing to a ballad on their lone LP Tyranny, you get the idea that their musical motif is more about raging against the machine more than it is building a new one.  John Frusciante, on the other hand, broke the wheel rather than put new paint on the spokes.  His first few releases, mainly his first album Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt, will shock many first time listeners because not only is it experimental, it's avant-garde, it's something that you haven't heard before.  He doesn't stay in key when he sings (or whines or yells) or plays his acoustic guitar, he doesn't structure his songs conventionally (or at all), the meanings are not apparent on first (or second or tenth) listen, the lyrics are hard to grasp at best and shocking at times, the lo-fi recording turns many away, and overall it's a very abrasive album if you go into it expecting anything.  Two different approaches but they can fall under the same umbrella.

Putting artists into genres can also help you see the similarities between the two that you might not have otherwise.  In the Southern hip-hop realm, Beatking and RiFF RAFF are pretty far apart in terms of fanbase, though they've collaborated once.  Looking deeper, though, you notice that both are heavily influenced by their Houston predecessors and contemporaries like DJ Screw, OG Ron C, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall, Scarface, et cetera.  In flow, cadence, lyrical content, and production, both owe large debts to their city and its musically-inclined denizens.

Re: Music

Well, I could unload my list of pandora stations, but I don't think you'd appreciate that.

Also, I'm not really sure about genres. I just listen to the stuff. So, I'll answer you in reverse format.

Shinedown: Hard rock, alternative metal, post-grunge
Disturbed: Heavy metal, hard rock, alternative metal
Linkin Park: Alternative rock, nu metal, alternative metal, rap rock, electronic rock
Three Days Grace: Post-grunge, hard rock, alternative rock, alternative metal, nu metal

Oh, looks like "hard rock" is a common theme. there you go.

Plus, some gospel, some comedy, now apparently some jazz, C W Mccall, johnny cash, etc.

Re: Music

I am a fan of Indie bands, it's about 90% of what I listen to, the other 10% comprises of Ska, Rap, Poetry, Punk & Electric; I like a bit of comedy in my music too.
I usually listen to a compilation of many bands and not always one specific band.

Links are to spotify, artist & song you should listen to first (some artists have explicit songs, will not link to an explicit song) - not in any specif order
Wild Child - Crazy Bird my current favourite band
Defiance, Ohio - Hairpool
Ramshackle Glory - Your Heart Is a Muscle the Size of Your Fist
Modest Mouse - Float On
Andrew Jackson Jihad - I couldn't find a non-explicit song that I would recommend as a first listen
Beirut - Santa Fe (I recommend their later stuff, The Gulag Orkestar and later - seem they have removed their old stuff from Spotify anyway)
The Aquabats! - The Shark Fighter!
Twenty One Pilots - Isle Of Flightless Birds
Black Bear - Black Bear a song I would recommend
Bright Eyes - Land Locked Blues
Cake - End of the Movie
Cloud Cult - Complicated Creation
Don DiLego - Falling Into Space
The Antlers - I don't want to recommend anything but "Bear" as the first song but it contained the f word twice and I won't directly link, it's on Spotify as a single at the bottom of the Artist page (I do not recommend the remix, the meaning and tone of the song is ruined) - it's from the album "Hospice".
Hey Ocean! - I Am a Heart

Ok, I could recommend hundreds of bands and songs - PM me if you do want more.

Wild Child - Crazy Bird : best music video ever

Thanks for the list! Albums surely give a better image of the artist than just one song, so these are good for finding new artists. I've been listening to the first one and like it a lot //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/big_smile

Single songs through a spotify link send you to the album but just plays the selected song first - for the bands that I listed the albums are consistent between differing ones from the same artist unless specified //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink
