Welcome To The NHK. It's a very depressing and emotional slice of life with lots of dark comedy. It's about a hikikomori (shut-in) and basically how he turns his life around. There are few anime that focus on a character like this and actually present hikikomoris as a real social problem, but this anime does it beautifully and tells a very moving story. At the same time, it doesn't just focus on one character. All of the characters have unique personalities and their own emotional troubles that are revealed and explored throughout the anime. Also, it is genuinely relatable for a lot of people. Even if you aren't a shut-in. The anime feels very real and human to me, and I wish I could watch it again for the first time, so it has earned its place as my favourite anime.

well from what i can tell the pokemon anime was made in japan, which according to the japanese cartoons = anime definition, would mean its an anime

Clannad is my favourite (Afterstory included).
I like the animes made from key's visual novels, and clannad is my favourite out of those. Especially the soundtrack is really amazing!

1. Sword Art Online - such a feelgood series, with a great plot on top of it
2. Death Note - amazing story development
3. No Game No Life - Honestly it's been so long since I watched this, I only remember I really enjoyed watching the one season.
4. Knights of Sidonia - Plot, yet again, and I also really enjoyed the color scheme/art style this one presents
5. The Last Airbender - "Western Cartoon" my ****, this is an anime, and a damn good one at that. This one excelled in the plot department, like most of this list, and I also enjoyed the humour presented
6. Angel Beats - Excelled in backstories, especially if you look into the manga/google the individual characters
7. Fairy Tail - Unlike the others, this one completely sucks in terms of plot, but outdoes all the others in action and humour. This series likes to make fights last forever

Avatar the last airbender is not anime, avatar created by USA but it's inspired by anime. Anime is supposed to be japanese cartoon.

Most of animation work for ATLA was done in South Korean studios (ik it's not Japan but still I should mention this). Similar for TLOK.

Not many but oh well :] Can't decide which one is best. I want to say ATLA but some think it isn't anime meh.

I would suggest u to watch Hunter x Hunter. It is way way way better than FairyTail in terms of well-written story, characters, fights .. everything.

There's a few for me, I suppose.
#1 Black Lagoon, just plenty of action, stormtrooper effect, mafia and all that.
#n The already-mentioned Angel Beats isn't too bad. Nice story, full of questions, twists, and well really sad crap.
#n Future Diary was pretty good. Everything really got twisty at the end. I probably like it simply because I was screaming "NO, GOD NO" (mentally) toward the end each time he, well, y'know
#n Jormugand with more action, a different spin on the idea compared to Black lagoon.

Grisaia No Kaijustu - (Mainly 2nd Season for being awesome)
High school of the dead - Love this kind of atmosphere
One Piece - Classic
Kuroko No Basket - Best sports anime imo
Clannad / AS - Really well made
Mahouka koukou no Reittousei - Dope action
Steins Gate - Awesome
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress - loved it (Zombies!)
The seven deadly sins - awesome storyline tbh
One punch man - no comment
Shokugeki No soma - Im always hungry after watching this

Kabaneri was really good but ending was so rushed that it ruins all the fun.

i would suggest you read the manga. i thought it was miles ahead of the anime, and its currently on chapter ~200 whereas the anime only goes to about chapter ~50 (in the manga) at the moment. unless of course you hate reading and prefer the visuals & audio.

Actually i tried reading manga but gave up after reading few chapters.
I prefer the audio and visuals.
