Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Ethernet-Over-Phone-Wire

So I have a predicament. For some reason, we want to put wifi in this metal shed. Wifi doesn't get in, so we have to get the wire in there somehow. It's around 150 feet away. I don't really want to run a wire and bury it all the way out there, but we already have a phone line that we aren't using. Can I drop the brown and blue pin/wires and just go over the phone wire? Really, would the wire be good enough quality to get some useful signal out there? I spliced an ethernet wire to test the 4 out of 8 pin setup and it worked... but now we have to graduate to the big picture.

Question:
We have some electrical wire left over. It doesn't twist the wires tho. Is that a deal-breaker when sending data 15 feet?
Also, will 150 feet of phone wire likely be high enough quality to get a usable connection out there?

eh, this is almost a blog post. but anyone with experience in the field do apply

I don't quite understand your situation.
You ought to do a modem?

Re: Ethernet-Over-Phone-Wire

Oops. We've got a modem in the house, wifi router's all good.

I'm fairly certain we can't do two modems on one phone line. Any yay/naysayers?

Gotta get from our inhouse modem to the outhouse ... shed. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/big_smile

Re: Ethernet-Over-Phone-Wire

If you don't use the same phone line on the same time is fine.
Also you may ask your phone service if you can do that, because they may have extra fees.
And to respond to OP, your "internet" speed I GUESS would be very much influenced by the modem inner-oscillation.

Running ethernet over phone wires is inadvisable. You would be lucky to get the slowest 10mbps form of ethernet over phone wires. If you really want to run ethernet to the shed, run some cat6 cable.

^Good lord, 10 mbps?
I agree, that's not great. But again, I don't want to up and bury the cable.

Btw, my internet speed is 1.5 mbps, so ...

Re: Ethernet-Over-Phone-Wire

Hey folks, it worked! I had two routers on either ends of the amateurly-spliced cable... and we had convos! just no internet.

New dilemma:
The router has to stay in a room that's considerably far away from where we need to be. Any tips on running wire in a finished house? lel
hmm :\

I have no idea how the name translates to english so Im just going to describe:
At DIY stores there are some small rectangular shaped pipes made of plastic(they're are made specifically for hiding the cables) . If you fix them on the walls(some of the come with adhesives) and pull the cable trough them it would look quite elegant. You would also need to use the drill near the door frame to get them out of the room. Good luck!

Re: Ethernet-Over-Phone-Wire

Aaaaahh, it's almost like the pre-2004 era of dial-up internet; having to patiently wait when your parents wanted to call somebody, getting miles-high ping when the traffic was high, and letting your PC running all night to download the... visual backups in case the connection went down.

On-topic: I'm no expert at all, but AFAIK your connection quality will certainly drop if the distance between both ends of the cable is longer than 100 meters (without a router/repeater/whatever somewhere) of course.
150 feet is ~45 meters, so I don't think there should be any problems with the cable length unless you keep twisting it like a hola hoop or stupid things like that.

I shouldn't give any tips about running wire in a house because my modem is literally right beside the PC and I still made it look like a tragic mess, but just letting the cable lying on the floor all the way back to your metal shed sounds bad.
You could make holes in the walls (it's harder if they're insulated #ColdClimateProblems); fix the cables near the ceiling so they won't be a hassle later, things like that.

They're just called conduit. Any professional who put down the phone wires should have put some down for the phone wires, however they might not have if they wanted to save the $20.

Re: Ethernet-Over-Phone-Wire

So THAT's conduit? Yeah, pretty sure we don't have the external stuff; everything's fancy and in the wall.

Recap: the wire to the shed is already there. I won't be using the hula-hoop style of cord management this time...

I hadn't thought of external showings. I guess I'd like to see the whole thing magically flutter through the wall... but that's impossible to go easily, as we have the rafters. :\

thx folks

Re: Ethernet-Over-Phone-Wire

*Clears throat*
OK, we settled on not going all frugal and throwing a wire through the wall. Broke down and got the over-the-electrical-wire solution. $70 and didn't drill a hole in the wall. I guess it's a win...

I'm a bit skeeved we can't use surge protectors (?) cuz lightning and that'd just an expense waiting to happen.

now to figure out operating temperatures for routers in a shed that gets nothing but direct sunlight y'know
