Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Basically you put date (and time) and the forum will display a real-time countdown. Also, the timezone will be adjusted to the poster's timezone.
This is a false statement.

arguably the wrong choice. what events would occur not at one specific instant, but respectively for each time zone? holidays?
you don't need the forums to tell you when christmas is.
but events that happen independent of the time zone seem more common.

I mean't during the posting. If the user puts the deadline to end at 5:00 PM, it's 5:00 PM for him.
This is a false statement.

Promise this isn't a useless gravedig
This idea would be especially useful in (as maxi points out) mafia. Especially when you have a gent who apparently likes GMT-1 as a timezone, but yesterday as a date. (Where is the int'l date line?)
and insofar no one's pointed out the "well just link to a countdown" in this topic, so really we have no naysayers.

That is the point of the suggestion, why gravedig?
I'm proud that I absolved the kindergarten and I don't need a computer to calculate a time difference.
Everybody edits, but some edit more than others
