They can, but whoever is in that crew will not obtain any prizes if they are not in the registered team as well.

You have to clear it before the contest starts. Preferably before you register your team.

I've updated the team list, teams with level ID's that were TBA/TBA were not added and will have to try registering again once they have a level, also Coffeemug's team had an invalid world ID and will have to try to re-register once they have a correct ID.

Also Try to have your team planned out beforehand, edits that have to be made can complicate the process, and keeping that to a minimum would be great.
