Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Some thoughts about EE music

Yes, it's been suggested a million times, but I want background music for worlds. Music in games is as important for the atmosphere as art, in some cases even more important. Having music makes a huge difference to how we experience the world, so we need some.

I do not want at all people to be able to just choose a random song they like and put it on their worlds. I think it'd be the best if players were to create these songs with their own little (or big) hands! That's why I think kirby's idea is amazing: http://forums.everybodyedits.com/viewtopic.php?id=32181

It'd might get a bit boring with just the piano sounds so I think it'd also be cool to kinda add some features to the piano blocks too!

If kirby's idea wouldn't work here are some others:

- There could be some sort of EE's own music editor, where you could just make songs and upload those to EE. To me this sounds kinda complicated though...

- Preset songs. EE would have it's own library of preset songs which everyone could use. It would get a bit boring since everyone used all the same songs :/

- Using something like midi files (audio files is a no no, because of various reasons), but the internet is full of midi files which people could just use claiming they made the songs, which isn't fun at all.

Anyway these are just random ideas. I don't care how you'll do it, but I will keep bugging you until you make background music on EE a thing. Thanks!

Re: Some thoughts about EE music

For the background music, make it so you can save the music worlds into midi files. Then to play it, add a play-list of the tracks you want to be played. For example, you have 5 midi tracks and you want to play them on EE as background music. Make a play-list, and add the links to the midi files. However, an option for volume to mute background music would be required.

Re: Some thoughts about EE music

See, if we want violins/trumpets/whatever instrument which has barely any decay with full sustain, we probably need note length control too. Cause if there's a default length, man there would be too may clashy notes or the composition would just sound awkward. And I think that would be a bit too complicated to implement. Instruments which work well with what blocks we have now would be idiophones (instruments which makes sound by hitting). I think a xylophone or steel drums would be nice. oh god please steel drums i love them so much aaaaaaa

Well, that's my view on new instruments, if it ever happens.

@awesomenessgood

Yeah that is pretty much the main problem with adding instruments to EE imo. That's why I suggested that weird track thing on the op, but I guess it might be a bit Complicated...

Mono instruments would indeed fix the problem: The note plays until you touch another one.

So that brings in a rest block?

This isn't really feasible with current BigDB limitations without hassle.

You mean any kind of background music? Or just the idea of using EE's note blocks?

Pretty much any kind. As it stands, there isn't much space in some worlds left in the BigDB objects (which one of the administrators emphasized with world size limitations).
If you have too large of a DatabaseObject size, it simply refuses to save, which for obvious reasons is unwanted.

There is the option of using third-party services, although that's rather hacky, costly with bandwidth and potentially risky with copyright depending on the format it's saved in.

And/or a pop-up, that the world owner included a YouTube video ID in the level's settings, do you want to open the music in a new tab to listen to it while playing, yes/no. Almost nobody will like this suggestion, but I guess I can still give my opinion. EE music is just uninteresting to me, but I still like the idea of being able to suggest music that could accompany the level to create a specific atmosphere. Zoey2070 made such a music suggestion in a forum post, and it was interesting to listen to what she had picked for the level while playing it.

Why YouTube in particular? What if I want to play music from websites besides YouTube? Why have to link to a video rather than a raw audio file, even though the latter would be faster and more efficient for those playing the level?

Upload it to YouTube? //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/wink
Anyway, the idea is to add an input field to the game that allows just enough characters to specify a YouTube video ID.
That way "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=" can be added, which should prevent the game from opening tabs to 'crazy' web pages.
Similar things may be possible for other video websites. Of course, the more input fields/options, the more work for the developers.

N1KF wrote:

Ease of use for the average EE level author. (When it's a choice between linking to YouTube or to a raw audio file.)
From what I know YouTube is defaulting to HTML5 (<video> element) for most people nowadays, which means there's not much overhead.

Whatever the case may be, my post was merely meant as a vote in favor of adding support for playing customizable music that goes beyond what EE is capable of producing.
Regardless of how unlikely it is anything like it will ever be added to EE.

Why not audio from a wide range of trusted sources, soundcloud for instance would be a smart choice for music selection, or http://labs.echonest.com/Uploader/index.html

Something like https://safeweb.norton.com/ could be in place and anything with a rating of 4-5 will be accepted and lower would have to be checked manually - people's own hosts would not be catered for.

Or just allow any link to be opened, no links that lead to a 502/503 or have a 404 javascript redirect.

You would then have people like me which are intimately familiar with midi format and work around the limitation anyways by creating a bot which can upload midi files. If there were such a feature, midi import would be the best option since it gives creators the option of using a full-featured music sequencer to make tracks, rather than whatever simple and limited editor the devs would come up with.

Playing midi files would be a bit of a development effort too, as the only way to play them well is to either interface with the midi driver on the system, or to mix the audio yourself, which isn't too hard if you know how to do it, but can be kind of spooky if you don't.

Re: Some thoughts about EE music

No. There shouldn't be links allowed to YouTube videos or anything like that, it's incredibly easy to upload videos that contain pornographic content or for example, this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUdr53XYdqU
The same goes for soundcloud, and any other hosts that permits anything beyond simple midi content.

The thing is, it's still possible to include voices in midi content with enough notes, and do you really want a loop of some midi voice evading censors?
It's abuse waiting to happen, and while it'd still be good to have this kind of functionality, the tracks would have to be manually approved.
