I live in Brazil and the media has been freaking out over this for months, so much that I can't take the word "microcephaly" seriously anymore. At least I'm not a pregnant woman.

Yes, but you "only" develop symptoms similar to the dengue (headaches, fatigue, red spots, etc.), which even us Brazilians are very familiar with.
The only really, really bad thing we know about it yet is that it might possibly lead to microcephaly and other weird stuff in newborn babies. Yet.

IIRC 80% don't show symptoms at all.

The realistic solution to this is to not have babies. This really reminds me of "Childhood's End" (shoutout if you've read the book, it's probably been six years since I have... I must've been a child!)

but yeah, basically people stop having kids for some reason, the existing kids are actually mutants somehow who end up destroying the Earth because they're some master race.

the moral of the story: zika will destroy the world through our preexisting children.

i mean maybe it is an emergency

a bunch of ppl take action to prevent things every time one of these infectious diseases starts spreading

for all i know they might cause significantly more damage than they would have if not for the precautions and actions taken

maybe we dont have to worry, but the who has to worry bc they have to do whatever like make vaccines as soon as possible

ebola killed thousands of ppl in a few african countries and as of the last time i checked it was gone in 2 of them as well as another but it kept appearing and disapearing in one

for all i know if ppl didnt take action in africa to help prevent its spread and didnt work on developing a vaccine it could have been much worse than how it is

idk my point is you cant really say it wasnt serious and no one has to worry when so much was done to prevent a worsening of the situation
it doesnt mean that it was serious, but it also doesnt mean that it wasnt

though none of that those steps are necessarily important to most ppl, from what i have read it seems to be important to pregnant women, and it is important to get the message around due to the unclear symptoms or whatever and the significant effects on newborns assuming there is a way to test for it, it will be important for pregnant women to be tested in case they might have it

you might get the zika virus, which in my understanding isnt harmless

and pregnant women need to know of its existence

those are probably the reasons why ppl should know about it

i dont know if anyone should care
