I had read something a while back that talked about this.

When you go to hit someone/something your muscles contract and try to slow down the punch, so that you don't get hurt.

When you hit yourself, it may not actually hurt as much as you think it does.  You just think about being hit, and being hit hurts, so you "feel" pain.

If you're in the middle of an actual fight, the "fight or flight" instinct kicks in and your body produces so much adrenaline that you pretty much almost feel no pain until it decides it's over. Seriously, you can get punched right in the face by most people and you'll barely feel it, in fact in your mind it's like "HAHA dude you cant hurt me im bimpsing invincible" - unless the dude actually beats the living lights out of you, which will make you want to jump out of a bridge with that much pain 5 minutes later.
If you're just punching yourself, though, I doubt your body will act like it's a "fight or flight" matter. You're just punching yourself for God's sake, of course that's gonna hurt in some way! Just don't punch a wall. Also never punch you or someone else's face, because there's a rigid skull underneath ready to screw up your hand bones.
