Honestly I was hoping someone already suggested this because I am not the best at explaining ideas.
It's the 'Heart Effect'. Or 'Lives Effect', if you want. Basically, it works like every other live system, the placer of the heart effect can choose how many hearts to give the player. The player who picks up the heart effect will then, instead of dying when touching a hazard, simply loses a life.
If the player stands on spikes with hearts, he will lose a heart, then after a few seconds lose another. That process will repeat.
If anyone likes this idea enough, may they please make graphics or pictures for what I have said above. I could do it but it would not good enough.

So it's like this as an example.
If you collect a heart effect, and it contains 3 hearts.Each time you hit a hazard you lose one heart. Say you hit a hazard on your 1st or 2nd heart, you act as if you didn't die with a small time limit for you to move off the hazard before you can get hit again. on the 3rd time you get hit, then you die and have to respawn from the last checkpoint you hit or spawn point, whatever you went to last.
I know this is basically the exact same thing cpcrabs said, but maybe this explanation might help for those that are confused.

Every suggestion leads to someone saying this exact same thing, and every time, whoever mentions it doesn't explain why they said it.
I can name multiple uses for this that don't involve a rpg. This suggestion adds something that people could use. Simply saying no because you know there could be a certain group that could use this in a certain way is a very bad way to judge a suggestion.

Actually you can make a bot for it:
1. Give the player heal effect
2. Save in the bot how many hearts he has
3. If the bots local "heart" will be == 0 then removing heal effect
4. Player will die
You can also do instead removing heal effect using the command /kill

This isn't like if you lose all hearts you lose the game (although that is a possibility people could make with this), it's also something so people can make different levels where you don't have to reset to a checkpoint every time you touch a spike until you lose all your hearts (then you go to a checkpoint).

Simplest way of explaining: It's like a health bar, if you touch a hazard, you lose a life, if you lose all lives then you respawn.

Play any RPG game (Not calling EE an RPG but just saying that's easiest way to make sense) and you can see that when you get hurt, you don't immediately die.
