i think the worst way to die would be to have thousands of tiny moai statues destroying ur insides cell by cell atom by atom in an excruciatingly painful process lasting for years. The pain would be such that you would be debilitated and unable to enjoy life, and the pain would gradually increase at a rate that would make it impossible to get used to.

lets see.

Drowning - the idea of the wait. the water filling you as you struggle to get the the surface.

falling - the wait. as you know your death is coming.

starvation - slow and miserable.

alone - why cruel world.

in my sleep - the idea of just disappearing, instantly. unaware.

disagree with some of these

worst type of deaths is prolonged deaths

when i was 6 there was this kid i really hated so i had an idea to torture him
every day there would be "stations" work which was basically five areas with different events
on that day the kid was listening to a story on headphones, so what i thought of was to tape the headphones to his head, isolate him in the bathroom, and every minute raise the volume a little higher
so after an hour it would be excruciating loud, and you can feel it getting louder

on the other hand, i think being cooked alive would be bad as well

being buried alive is probably my biggest fear
even though it sounds impractical, it is extremely scary

this is actually really fun to learn about, so i'll give you even more examples

i heard the greeks were the worst torturers

once, they locked a dude inside of a log and poured honey and milk all over him, attracting the flies
then the flies would lay larvae in his body, while he was still alive
to keep him from dying, they would constantly feed him honey and milk
it was said the smell of his rotting flesh was so incredible you could smell it from a mile away
EDIT: that's when i noticed this is called Scaphism, which is exactly what creature said

another one was being locked inside of an iron jug with a flame underneath
basically you would be cooked to death (called Brazen Bull)

if anyone reads poe stories, they would like this one
a really horrible way to die is to lie paralyzed against a wall with all of your senses intact
then someone would come over and slowly, brick by brick, build a wall over you
and you can't do anything since your paralyzed, so you'll just be sitting there, internally screaming, while the person traps you inside of a corridor

The story of Doyle (being boiled alive)
NYC medical examiner judy melinek states Doyle was walking home with a friend and his girlfriend, and Doyle's friend believed Doyle was hitting on his girlfriend, so he started beating up Doyle. Then he threw Doyle into a manhole and landed into a pit of boiling water. It was nearly four hours before the paramedics arrived, and it was said Doyle looked like a cooked lobster; his outer skin peeled off, his internal organs cooked like a steak. And he was alive during all of this.

Medieval Flaying (skinned alive)
In the middle ages, as a form of torture, people would literally be skinned alive, usually starting from the fingertips. Some would even be kept in the sun for days until sunburned, and then start the skinning. They would usually die when the knife reaches the waist.

Emphysema (suffocation)
This is surprising, since it is a disease, but is surely is incredibly painful to watch and to feel. People with emphysema would attempt to breathe, but cannot since their lungs won't cooperate. They would be lying there, hopeless, while they suffocate to death.

Eaten alive
it speaks for itself

And as a counter argument to the above posts, being burning alive (different from cooked alive, whereas the person is shoved into an oven and cooked) is actually not the worst way to die since endorphins are released and makes the skin numb.

As to shadowda's suggestions, death while sleeping is actually the most peaceful way of dying, since the person won't feel anything. They'll just pass

falling is quick and usually painless, depending on the height
if you were to fall from a twenty story building, you will feel fear from the falling, but you'll probably die in an instant when you hit the ground
it's not the fall that kills you, but the contact against the ground, and it's amazing how many people think the fall is the killer

drowning is pretty horrible, but if you think about it, there's panic, and then you slowly drift into nothing
but it is very scary, since drowning takes a couple of minutes, and the fear would be unbearable

And the final death method that I know of is Chinese water torture
this is where a person is tied horizontally, and little drops of water are dropped onto the person's forehead
doesn't sound so bad, right?

however, with the combination of fearing when the next drop will come, the erosion of skin due to the drop, and the cold water drives the person insane

usually the victim dies of insanity, or the forehead wound caused by the water

physical and mental torture

the most painful deaths are the longest ones

imagine something licking your arm and then it keeps on licking it for around 2 weeks until the skin gets pruney and peels off like paint
and then it will go on to the rest of your body but since it takes so long the rest of your skin has already regrown so basically it'll be a circle of lick-shed-grow-lick-shed-grow
