Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Piracy

Is it really morally justifiable to pirate media? (games, movies, TV, etc)

Re: Piracy

If all what you want is fast, cheap stuff, then yes. Although it's illegal, it's most of the commerce right now.

Re: Piracy

Depends on the motive. For games if you pirate the game to play test it to make sure your computer can run it and see if it something you'd like then go for it. Just as long as you buy the game when you like it.

Re: Piracy

I personally don't pirate things because I'd rather credit the people who made it. This is especially true with smaller artists (in music at least) as downloading their stuff for free can really steal from them. Pirating from the giants probably won't affect them at all, but it's still good to pay for their music. If you pirate something with the intent to pay later as you might not have enough money, that's cool, and a lot of artists support that. Imo you shouldn't pirate but do what you want because it's not the hugest of issues and you're probably responsible with your stuff idk

Re: Piracy

I don't think there's anything morally wrong with pirating games or music to see if they're any good if there's no demo or preview available. But if you're pirating with no intention of actually buying it if you like it then that's bad and you should feel bad.

Here's the way I look at it, if you have your own ship and crew you can do what ever you want.

True story.

I usually donate to the people later, because the prices they ask for are insane.

Re: Piracy

Strictly speaking, everyone should be compensated for their work. But the concept of paying people for ideas does put an odd spin on things. Just because we all agree that "X song is great," should it pay out millions of dollars?

Regardless, that seems to be what happens. One justification is that pricing is too high, so pirating balances it out. Of course, that isn't a reliable view, because if many people pirate, profits are severely cut.

However, I really doubt that any amount of pirating done on the main stream really affects the industries heavily. In other words, if the movie's big enough, the few people getting it for free aren't dampening the profit margin at the box office. They just aren't. If the industries want to get greedy about that last bit (which they seem to be) then that's their rights, I suppose.

Re: Piracy

If a game is popular then it's worth playing for me
thus I pirate it
if it's popular it also has a lot of income so 1 pirate won't hurt their moneybags (yes I know there will be many other pirates but idc honestly)
i would propably legally buy games if not the awful economics in the country where i live

Re: Piracy

I pirate whenever I dont have enough money on steam to buy the game. If I have enough I will most likely buy it.

Re: Piracy

1. Pirate the game
a) if you like it - buy it
b) if you don't like it - get rid of it and don't play it anymore

I feel like pirating should be an option to check the game or whatever you want first. If you like it you should then buy a legit version and support the author; if not, forget about it.

Re: Piracy

Since where I live everything is taxed so much, so much, I pirate what I can (and because I don't have the money to buy the original)

For example, I bought a second handed cellphone for 100 "money", while the book for a class I was attending costs 200 "money". For comparison, the DIGITAL version of the books it's almost the same price as the cellphone I bought.
In situations like this, "moral" and "ethics" are just cute concepts.

Re: Piracy

Piracy's one of those things that everyone does, but jokingly laughs that they don't.

For me pirating comes down to two main things: Can I buy it? If I can buy it is it worth it?

I have had times where I have wanted music from YT videos, but they are done by independent artists wherein there is no link for download. Hence why I might 'pirate' certain songs. As for movies, well then comes the 'is it worth it' argument. There are many movies which I haven't seen, but wanted to. Some not so much because I think they are good, but so I can be a part of the broader dialogue in entertainment in media. IE: Back to the future.

That being said, like most people, I try to support artists as much as possible if I can, especially independent ones.
