The pets can't touch hazards unless you turn that effect on in settings

Or maybe if you touch the spike you go to the checkpoint/spawn point. And tomatically your pet will be teleported at you. The pet will follow yours moviments and if he fall in spikes your pet will die. Just use your pet in somes levels that have no hazards. "Be careful, use your pet when the world is secure"...
