without him, we would never have:

switches, which, especially once they had their own ids, opened up more possibilities for puzzles
signs, which let worlds have an actual plot without making a bunch of room for minimap art or having a mod come over
effects, due to them being inspired by potions
boosts, which let things like these be much faster and more efficient
time blocks, which also aided several systems/devices
spikes and checkpoints, which were much more efficient as hazards than portals
builder's club, which is very efficient for some people
coin gates and blue coin doors/gates, which also opened up more possibilities

and finally:

this game would not even be alive anymore if he hadn't offered (or agreed) to help chris, and if he hadn't promoted several users to guardians

There's nothing wrong with the guy himself. He did indeed had some good additions to the game, and I've been in contact with him for a while and he's genuinely a very nice dude.

He doesn't get the all the hate for what he did, most of the hate seems to come from what he didn't do. In other words, keeping the game up and running and thus allowing the game to bleed out.

Rushed Updates: MrShoe was only allowed a certain number of hours a week to work on Everybody Edits. The amount of time he was allowed, was determined by the amount of money the game brought in. He loved the community, and wanted to provide content for us. The reason updates were every week, was because he was trying to raise revenue so he could spend more time, and add better things. He had a huge list of things that he wanted to add to the game.

Builders Club: People hate this, and this is often tagged as a huge reason for EE's "rough patch". This was added to try and increase revenue. More money = more time = better updates.

Magic Classes: I have no idea why this was added. I think this was just something he liked.

1 Year No Updates: Almost no revenue at all. MrShoe was allowed to work on EE for around 1 hour a week. And most times that was cut short because of other projects. That hour meant everything EE related: emails, reports, discussions, etc. This is why he added guardians, people who could help him run the game outside of that allowed hour. That didn't help, and the game was faced with either being transferred to a new owner, or being shut down. We saved it

Shoe didn't give up the game. He loved the game, and especially the people that played it. He's a cool guy, pretty laid back, funny.
