I heard it actually became popular. Most possibly because is very light weight. I guess is good for prototyping something specific. Since the interpreter doesn't load useless things. Making it a very fast compared to other scripting languages. It also has a pretty small api to combine C code with it, which is nice...  However I'm bit disappointed that isn't totally object oriented.
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't even have Lua...

Pretty useful for game mods. My entire Payday 2 game is filled with Lua hook mods, made by others of course because I'm too lazy to actually program something.
@Amds The Lua language was actually made by a bunch of Brazilian guys. One of the few good things to come out of our country I guess
