It doesn't matter how it was intended to sound.
It matters how the general people pronounce it. Since most people pronounce it Gif(t), then it's been (mostly) accepted that the correct pronunciation is Gif(t).
Commonness is not the same as correctness. Technically, "forums" isn't a word. The correct word is "fora". But "forums" is much more common. The difference is that people can understand you no matter how you pronounce gif while the same can't be said of "fora". I'm not sure where I'm going with this anymore (probably because it's like 5AM) but there it is.

Well I pronounce a bunch of words wrong anyways. Doesn't mean I'm correct, that's just how I say them
