Do you think I could just leave this part blank and it'd be okay? We're just going to replace the whole thing with a header image anyway, right?

Ads.

I was originally going to post this in Update Discussion for Forums but figured it was a big enough change to warrant its own topic for discussion and such.

Also, we have ads now. Well, one ad. I'll tell you guys why and try to keep it short.

Backstory for anyone who cares: Long ago (August 2014), when Fail and the EEForums were very separate, I put a banner ad on fail so that one day we would be able to afford to move to better hosting than this potato. We had grand dreams, dreams of paid hosting and a good .com or .net domain name instead of the sometimes unreliable free ones from Africa. This was before the African authorities seized our tewin.ml domain. *glances uneasily at our own african domain name*

Anyway, we chose to go with Google Adsense for no reason in particular. The minimum payout for Google Adsense is $100. You can't take home a smaller amount than that. The way things started out, it looked like we'd make it in no time at all. But then advertisers started losing interest in us, and a sudden and unexpected domain name change when tewin.ml went belly-up meant fail's activity dropped a bit which took a bigger chunk out of the ad revenue than you'd think. The account currently sits at $67 and goes up about $.02-$0.04 a day at this point. At that rate, it'd be another 3 years before we make the minimum payout.

But since all the chaos that happened with eeforumify.com and we moved to forums.everybodyedits.com, Fail and the EEForums are a lot closer. They both share the same server, along with our friendly chat room bot, EEBot, who actually doesn't do much besides recite quotes people give him. (if you have any suggestions, I guess Forum Discussion would be the place to put it, or maybe the topic on the chat room. Whichever.)

BACKSTORY OVER

This is where ads on these forums come in. The adsense account I have is already 2/3s of the way to the minimum payout of $100. With just 1 banner ad on these forums, I'm sure we'd be able to finish off the last third in no time, and $100 is enough to pay the hosting bills for a whole 3 and half years if we use it for nothing else. After that we can get rid of the ads if you guys want and not worry about the bills at all until late 2018 when the money starts to run out. You guys don't have to click on the ads or anything, just let them be and continue foruming on.

Re: Ads.

Right, I forgot about that part. If you guys could add us to the whitelist on whatever adblocking thing you use, that would be 80/10.

Also forgot to add that you SHOULD NOT click the ads purely for our sake. We'll make $100 soon enough even without clicks, and I'd feel bad for the advertisers who had to pay extra for a click that never even had a chance of panning out for them, just so we could get a little more. Also it's against the Google AdSense ToS so there's that, too. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue If we get kicked out of Google AdSense, we're out whatever money we happened to have earned.

Yes, if the product being offered interests you, you should click it. That's what ads are for, after all, connecting consumers and companies that otherwise probably would never have seen each other. //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/tongue And yeah, the site now resizes itself horizontally to the width of the device, although it's not perfect and the site is far from being mobile-optimized. I'll be working on it more in the future.

Technically, yeah.
The one thing website owners are never supposed to do is click on an ad, so when I did it accidentally all the way back in August, I read ALL the documentation on Google AdSense and found out that if you accidentally click an ad it won't mean you're automatically and permanently kicked out of AdSense. The same thing probably applies to users, as well.

Woah, what?  You're not allowed to click the ads yourself?

It's a lot nicer than it was. I don't have to zoom in anymore if i want to do some late night foruming!
although quoting looks terrible, which is pretty standard i guess.

also what if i click on an ad that takes me to a site i already use
is that cheating
(also I just realized why fashion was in my ad interests)

Re: Ads.

@Dazz What browser/version are you using and on what system? Do you have screenshots of both 100% and 90% so you can show both?

Re: Ads.

Never. If I want a product offered through an ad on a site I own, I have to go to my ad dashboard and search every ad that has ever been posted on here for it, and then click it there. To date, I've only done that once and I didn't even want the product offered. Somebody else had described it and it sounded funny so I wanted to see it too.

And wow, yesterday went better than expected. Before I posted the ad on here, it was looking like yesterday was going to be another normal, $0.02 day for ads. In the 3 hours since I posted ads until midnight, that went from $0.02 to $0.09. That's $0.07 in 3 hours. Just from views. Not bad.

And remember, if there are any ads that aren't playing nice, report them to me and I'll take care of it. I'll need a screenshot and a description of what the ad is doing that isn't good, and I'll find it and block it from showing up.

EDIT: Wow, there are a lot of ninjas in this thread.

When you get back, if you could also list the version of chrome, that'd be great. Chrome changes a lot. It's impossible to keep up with all the issues some of the various versions of chrome has.

Re: Ads.

For some reason its making me offers for a smartphone.
I don't have a smartphone, I don't want a smartphone. Why they still trying?
It must be a bot that reads now all posts and make ads for what we "need" or what friends "like".
I just don't like ads... Maybe hosting prices will be more useful //forums.everybodyedits.com/img/smilies/smile

Maybe you can put one on the bottom of the page, too.
Also, could you center it?

So far it's been centered on every browser I've seen, which is a grand total of 3. Browser/version/OS/version?

Your centring is static not flexible.
